Meg White
Ray LaMontagne Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're alright
In fact, I think you?re pretty swell
Can't you tell?
Meg White
Such a pretty thing
I saw your face on the cover
Of a magazine
Some day (some day)
I'd like (I?d like)
To take a walk with you
Maybe ride our bikes down by the sea side
Meg White
I saw you on the big screen
Oh, Jack was king, but you stole the scene
Meg White
Baby, you're the bomb
Oh, Jack is great don?t get me wrong
But this is your song
Some day (some day)
I'd like (I'd like)
To take a walk with you
Talk about most anything you'd like to talk about
And watch the sun going down
Going down
Playin' those drums is hard to do
It's true
And nobody plays them quite like you do
Meg White
You're alright
In fact, I think you're pretty swell
Can't you tell?
Meg White
Such a pretty thing
I saw your face on the cover of a magazine
Some day (some day)
I'd like (I'd like)
To take a walk with you
Maybe ride our bikes down by the sea side
And watch the sun going down
Going down
Ray LaMontagne's song "Meg White" appears to express admiration for the drummer of the White Stripes, Meg White. The lyrics seem to be telling Meg White that she is appreciated and respected for her drumming skills and personality. The repetition of the positive statement, "you're alright," suggests a deeper meaning and level of appreciation for her uniqueness and talent that is often overlooked or overshadowed, despite her widespread recognition. The lyrics imply that Ray LaMontagne has a desire to connect with Meg White, possibly suggesting that he desires a friendship or a musical collaboration, as expressed in the line, "some day I'd like to take a walk with you, talk about most anything you'd like to talk about," and ride bikes by the seaside.
The song reflects the sentiment of admiration towards the White Stripes that was and remains omnipresent in the indie and rock music scenes. It was the first single off Ray LaMontagne's album "Gossip in the Grain" released in 2008.

Love this!! I especially like the fact that he did the song in their style of music and used the same childlike drumming technique that meg did. And the lyrics are freaking adorable. <3
@Jorman223
Indeed. The rhythm in the verse is reminiscent of the White Stripes style for sure. It reminds me of the song Apple Blossom.
@True_Christian
That's beautiful how Ray instructed his drummer to imitate Meg White's signature drumming style for the drums in this song. Meg White is so amazing and the best drummer ever.

If they ever make a movie about Meg White they already have the title song at least.

I see a bunch of misinformed posters, so I want to set the record straight: Ray is married to a woman named Sarah, with whom he has two kids. He's often stated in interviews that this is just a song; the lyrics just popped into his head while he was writing the music and it seemed to fit. To add some perspective, he wrote this around the same time Meg White was suffering from acute anxiety issues and had to cancel a number of White Stripes concerts because of it (in fact, I think pretty much all their 2007 concerts were cancelled). This isn't a dedication of love so much as one of support, and a very nice one at that. :)
