The term also means all those who compose and then perform their own songs, the term in contemporary Italian refers to Italian popular singers, for example the musicians during the student protests of the 1960s and '70s, who wrote songs that have social or political relevance.
Some of the most famous cantautore artists in Italy are Lucio Battisti, Francesco Guccini, Claudio Lolli, Lucio Dalla, Francesco De Gregori, and Fabrizio De André. A few of the more recent cantautore artists are Samuele Bersani, Daniele Silvestri, Jovanotti, Luciano Ligabue and Vinicio Capossela.
The term may also apply to non-Italian singer-songwriters, e.g. Bob Dylan is an American "cantautore".
Sparring Partner
Paolo Conte Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Dice lei di lui
Che gli manca la memoria
In fondo ai guanti bui
Ma il suo sguardo è una veranda
Tempo al tempo e lo vedrai
Che si addentra nella giungla
No, non incontrarlo mai
Ho guardato in fondo al gioco
Tutto qui, ma sai
Sono un vecchio sparring partner
E non l'ho visto mai
Una calma più tigrata
Più segreta di così
Prendi il primo pullmann, via
Tutto il reso è già poesia
Avrà più di quarant'anni
E certi applausi ormai
Son dovuti per amore
Non incontrarlo mai
Stava lì nel suo sorriso
A guardar passare i tram
Vecchia pista da elefanti
Stesa sopra al macadàm
The first line of the song, "È un macaco senza storia, dice lei di lui," translates to "He's a monkey without a history, she says of him." The following line, "Che gli manca la memoria in fondo ai guanti bui," means "That he lacks the memory in the depth of his dark gloves." Through these lyrics, the song portrays a person who is a mystery, lacking in memory and history. The singer tells the listener not to meet him: "No, non incontrarlo mai."
The second verse begins with "Ho guardato in fondo al gioco tutto qui, ma sai," translating to "I looked deep into the game, that's it, but you know." The singer identifies himself as a "sparring partner," indicating he is familiar with this mysterious person. He adds that he has never seen him, suggesting that their relationship is more metaphorical. The rest of the verse describes the person's calm and secrets, with the lines "Una calma più tigrata, più segreta di così" meaning "A more tiger-like calm, more secret than this."
The final verse has the lyrics "Stava lì nel suo sorriso a guardar passare i tram, vecchia pista da elefanti stesa sopra al macadàm." In English, this translates to "He stood there in his smile watching the trams pass, old elephant track laid out on the macadam." This person is described as a spectator, observing and contemplating with an air of mystery.
Overall, the song is a meditation on memory and the unknown, with a tone of intrigue and distance.

che meraviglia. Ma come deve essere una "calma tigrata"? Che sublime, meraviglioso pezzo. Quando sento questo pezzo mi viene in mente l episodio "La nobile arte" del film "I mostri" con Gassman e Tognazzi. Alla fine i due pugili suonati giocano con gli aquiloni in riva al mare...
"è un macaco senza storia, dice lei di lui, che gli manca la memoria in fondo ai guanti bui". Ma come si fa scrivere robe del genere? da brividi.
