Cool Yule
Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From Coney Island to The Sunset Strip
Somebody's gonna make a happy trip
Tonight, while the moon is bright

He's gonna have a bag of crazy toys
To give the groanies of the girls and boys
So dig, Santa comes on big

He'll come a-callin' when the snow's the most
When all you cats are sleepin' warm as toast
And you gonna flip when Old Saint Nick
Lays a lick on the peppermint stick

He'll come a-flyin' from a higher place
And fill the stocking by the fireplace
So you'll have a yule that's cool

Yeah, from Coney Island to the Sunset Strip
Somebody's gonna make a happy trip
Tonight, while the moon is bright

He's gonna have a bag of crazy toys
To give the groanies of the girls and boys
So dig, Santa comes on big

Come a-callin' when the snow's the most
Cats are sleepin' warm as toast
And you gonna flip when the Old Saint Nick
Lays a lick on the peppermint stick

He'll come a-flyin' from the higher place
Fill the stockings by the fireplace
So you'll have a yule that's cool

Have a yule that's cool
Yeah, cool yule

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Louis Armstrong's song "Cool Yule" celebrate the joys of a Christmas filled with happiness and presents. The song details the arrival of Santa Claus, whom the lyrics affectionately refer to as "Old Saint Nick," as he travels across America from Coney Island to The Sunset Strip. Santa is described as having a "bag of crazy toys" that he will distribute to the "groanies" (meaning the deserving and appreciative recipients) of both girls and boys. As the moon shines brightly, Santa will arrive at homes during the snowiest, coziest part of the evening, like an otherworldly visitor, and stuff stockings with peppermint sticks.

The song paints a picture of the perfect, colorful Christmas, one that cherishes family and friends, and that is full of the tradition of gift-giving. From the excitement of receiving presents to the coziness of being warm and toasty inside with loved ones, Louis Armstrong's "Cool Yule" is a fitting anthem to the most magical time of the year.

Why don't I ever hear this on the radio during Christmastime?

I remember first hearing this song in the movie BLOW with Johnny Depp. It comes on when Paul Reubens’ character Derek Fureal comes down the stairs with a guy and a woman flanking him.

This song was written by Steve Allen. I never knew that he was a songwriter. Impressive!
