Fire of the Mind
Coil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Does death come alone or with eager reinforcements?
Does death come alone or with eager reinforcements?
Death is centrifugal
Solar and logical
Decadent and symmetrical
Angels are mathematical
Angels are bestial
Man is the animal
Man is the animal

The blacker the sun
The darker the dawn
Flashes from the axis
Flashes from the axis
On the hummingway to the stars

Holy holy, holy holy, holy oh holy
Holy holy, holy holy, holy
Holy holy, holy holy, holy

Man is the animal

The blacker the suns
The darker the dawn

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Coil's song "Fire of the Mind" seem to be exploring themes of death and the nature of existence. The repeated question of "Does death come alone or with eager reinforcements?" suggests a contemplation on the possibility of death coming unannounced or being surrounded by other deaths, either literally or metaphorically. The following lines build upon this feeling of uncertainty, followed by the assertion that death is "centrifugal" - suggesting an outward force or motion. This is paired with the descriptions of angels as "mathematical" and "bestial," which juxtaposes the religious connotations of angels with something primal and instinctual. These lines evoke a sense of confusion around the nature of death and what comes after it.

The last stanza of the song repeats the phrase "The blacker the sun / The darker the dawn," which carries with it a sense of impending doom or a sense of an ending. This is further emphasized by the line "Flashes from the axis / On the hummingway to the stars," which paints an image of a journey towards an unknown end, full of flashes of light and sound. The repetition of "holy holy" also adds to the feeling of transcendence and a search for meaning in the face of the unknown.

Overall, the lyrics of "Fire of the Mind" are abstract and somewhat cryptic, inviting interpretation and reflection on concepts of death, existence, and spirituality.

probably for me personally, the music of this band can be compared with the first viewing of a horror movie or a porn film ... you can joke about horror porn .. you understand that this is wrong. you understand that it scares you. you understand that you should not watch it, and even less enjoy it.

but you get.

because there is darkness in you, which you try with all your might not to let out. the darkness that scares you. darkness that terrifies. because this darkness is yourself. no tinsel, no masks of hypocrisy. at first it scares, and then you wonder why others are afraid.

listening to coil is like going through the 5 stages of grief:
- you deny that their work is music at all
- you are angry because this is not just music, but music that you personally do not understand
- you are trying to bargain, you tell yourself that you just do not like the ideas of the band and their style
- you realize that after all, their ideas and style are close to you and it plunges you into depression, because you still think that it is wrong
- you find this video on YouTube of your own free will and do not interrupt it until the very end. and then you start again.

whoever you are and regardless of how you became what you became - perhaps you and I are very similar, my sacred dark brother or sister

My sister really loved Coil. We only met a few times, but I felt such a strong connection to her. She was twise as old as me (I'm 20) I was shocked to know she was gone, very alone, and found many days later... I'm afraid of the same fate right now. Dying alone and nobody would even care for me... When I hear Coil, my thoughts go with her.

Me too. If I had someone to be there for me in my final 30 minutes - I would take a strong barbiturate right now. Talk philosophy in the final 30 minutes before I close my eyes one last time. I'm 45 now, youthful looking still, fairly physically healthy. But my mind is diseased. It's incurable, I've had treatment resistant depression all my life, since I was 13. I want this torture to end so badly. I loved others, sometimes to the point of madness, to self-sacrifice, but I never felt loved either because I wasn't or because I was incapable of feeling it? Probably the former. Someone being there would be an act of love, an act of mercy. It's so cruel to not be able to offer a cure and yet withhold the dignity of peaceful death from someone the way our society does.

I cried to this song so many times destroyed by its sheer power. This guy understood things that would be impossible to explain in words, yet he uses words to hold them in focus. Absolutely magical.

@Meshtar

@BigFloofyCat

So much death and sorrow in the world already...and we lose John and Peter. We lost two voices, two souls who were always there for us...and even from the great beyond, they are still tending the fires and soothing us with their work. John and Peter. Thank you for the legacy you have left for us. May we aspire to be as insightful and perceptive as you were in this life. You will never fade away or be forgotten.
