Hawk was a true magician on the sax. His lines have something of a transcendental quality, giving the notion that these phrases have existed long before and will long after the Hawk plucked them from the ether and blew them from his horn, somewhere in some way.

No one has ever did BNS like Hawkins.!! Lester Young was close but Colman was the goat. This was pure magic! First heard this in my history of music (elective) class in college. This unexpectedly got me through that class after hearing it. It also gave me a love and appreciation for the contributions jazz and it’s early pioneers gave to music and the creation of different styles of music such as RnB, pop, rock, rap and so on.

well...the most difficult thing to me is to think, that by the time this record was done the bop hadn't been born. You know, Bird, Dizzy, Miles, created modern jazz language. We used to hear phrases and licks from them. And Hawkins composed his solo when that language, that licks that are in our subconciosness just didn't exist. Unbelievable.

while I see where you're coming from in terms of the bebop language coming into prominence with bebop artists, people like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and all of the music from that time period used melodic ideas present in bebop. Bop just innovated and made these ideas the core of the music rather than a supplement, specifically in the playing of Bird whose playing was extremely technical.

@Preston Lee In the end, bebop put an end to melodic playing. Most of them noodled up and down ever more complicated chords, just as 'l'art pour l'art'. Hawk's tasteful playing of the 30ies has nothing to do with that. Hawk himself did play some bop, eventually, but HE always retained his penchant for original melodic ideas. Most people are impressed by bop because it sounds difficult. It isn't. You can play bop without the least (!) imagination or original ideas, just using technique and basic musical knowledge of chords. I did this myself, occasionally, when I was young. Hardly anybody realizes when you play clams - they think you have modern conceptions of chords. When I saw this I stopped bop and came back to old jazz. In trad jazz most people realize when you play junk - this is why you should have some real ideas when you play it. Satch, Bechet, Beiderbecke, Berigan, D. Reinhardt, J. Hodges, Lester Young... used chords as a means to produce beauty, not as an end in itself. There are, of course, outstanding modern musicians. I love Coltrane's 'After the rain', almost everything Monk played. I like much of Bill Evans' music and Tony Scott, even some free jazz (German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff is a favorite of mine). They all INVENT things, they don't noodle routines.

MrJimmienoone I like the insight. Can’t say I quite agree with your ideas of bop music, though. I used to detest it and essentially say the same things, that it was non-melodic and lacked soul. Now, I’ve learned to appreciate some of it. While I still don’t like most bebop, I now feel that it is because my ears have simply not been trained enough. I hope to eventually acquire a taste for it. Regardless, for me, my roots are in older jazz - more specifically, swing. It makes me beyond happy to hear you mention names like Bunny. I’ve only met one person in real life who knew his artistry. Thanks for keeping all these musicians alive!

Some of us have favorite periods in jazz where we like the style of music better than other periods. Coleman Hawkins gets credit for spanning two generations of jazz and changing with the times. For me jazz started in 1939 with Body and Soul and progressed with bebop and hard bop. Why Louis Armstrong couldn't embrace bebop and hard bop is something that never sits quiet right with me somehow.

It was a sensation; Hawk had been in Europe for some Years, playing with a o Django Reinhard and the dutch dance band The Ramblers and was nearly forgotten, when he returned to the US, shortly before the outbreak of WW2.

Some musicians live long enough and are flexible enough to span periods and change them. Hawkins had been recording for 16 years when he made Body and Soul. He starts recording a year before Bix and by this time Bix had been dead for several years. Hawkins often joked that his 1923 Fletcher Henderson sides had been made by his grandfather. He had changed with Louis A in the band and kept open to change in the swing and bop eras.

It's like it starts off with a brief piano solo (and its little flutter at 0:03), and then the song is picked up by a young Tenor Saxophone. It sounds like it's playing playfully until 1:31, when a second horn plays slowly and ominously. It's like it's saying "What do you think you're doing, young man?"

The 'mother horn' then watches and follows the sax closely, playing faintly behind, until at 2:00, when the sax 'raises his voice again', the horn shouts at the bad boy sax.The sax then flees from his overbearing mother and plays alone, until 2:31 when another older horn scolds the young sax for playing around. You can hear the sax fluttering against the older horn. The sax flees a final time, playing more softly (at 2:48) until all of them are at peace (at 2:55) and the story (the song) comes to an end.

egyptianminor I think he means there's no point writing the transcription down. I actually agree with him. I started out writing everything down, but it just creates and extra step between the music and your inner ear. Best to simply memorize the solo and make it part of you. If necessary you can write it down to analyse what he's doing, though.

I'm a pianist who used to play at a piano bar in lower Manhattan. A young man used to come in and listen to me and we'd shoot the breeze. One day he mentioned his father , Coleman Hawkins, in a sentence and I said "Hold it. What did you just say?" He was David Hawkins, his son, and I never forgot that evening.

@Marshaun James Coleman Hawkins has 3 children, a son named Rene and two daughters, Colette and Mimi. I couldn't find anything about a son called David Hawkins. However, there seems to be a white philosopher with the same name. Needless to say this story is clearly made up to get likes which is kind of sad.
