Collide
Howie Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A light shining through
You're barely waking
And I'm tangled up in you
Yeah
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
I'm open, you're closed
Where I follow, you'll go
I worry I won't see your face
Light up again
Even the best fall down sometime
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills my mind
I somehow find
You and I collide
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
I'm quiet you know
You make a first impression
I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind
Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the stars refuse to shine
Out of the back you fall in time
I somehow find
You and I collide
Don't stop here
I lost my place
I'm close behind
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills your mind
You finally find
You and I collide
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
Finally find
You and I collide
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
You finally find
You and I collide
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do)
The song "Collide" by Howie Day is an emotional and introspective ballad about a relationship that may be struggling, yet the two parties involved are hesitant to let go. The lyrics express the singer's fears and doubts about the relationship, but also his strong desire to hold on and to make it work. The opening lines, "The dawn is breaking, a light shining through, you're barely waking, and I'm tangled up in you" evoke a sense of vulnerability and intimacy between the two characters. The singer is so entangled in the relationship that he feels like he can't extricate himself from it, no matter how hard he tries.
The chorus of the song reinforces this theme of resilience in the face of uncertainty; "Even the best fall down sometime, even the stars refuse to shine, out of the back you fall in time, I somehow find, you and I collide." Despite the challenges that the characters face, they keep coming back to each other, finding a way to make things work. However, this is tinged with a sense of insecurity, as the singer worries about losing the other person and their relationship falling apart. This is highlighted in the line "I worry I won't see your face light up again."
Throughout the song, there is a sense of tension between the two characters, with the singer feeling like he is more invested in the relationship than the other person. He remarks that "I'm open, you're closed, where I follow, you'll go," indicating that he is more willing to put in the effort to make the relationship work. Despite this, he still feels drawn to the other person, finding their initial attraction hard to ignore, as he states that "Even the wrong words seem to rhyme, out of the doubt that fills my mind, I somehow find, you and I collide."
Overall, "Collide" is a powerful and emotional song about the complexities of relationships and the struggles of trying to hold on to someone when things are tough.

I'm with ya. I actually met him in person right after I learned to play this song on my guitar. He performed in Alexandria Virginia at a concert venue that I was working at called The Birchmere. He's so down to earth. I was smoking a cigarette and he came outside to the smoking area. ❤
