Could This Be The End
The Stylistics Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As crazy as it seems not a sign of life
Just can't figure why I should be all alone
People all around me
From the corner I could see children laughter and games
Some were doing nothing much some were trying in vain
Some seek fortune deep in the night, I ask why
Living in a daydream
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
Was in knowing all their rules, fools will do what they must
Some may see it as I do others say I'm unjust
They seek fortune deep in the night, I ask why
Living in a daydream
there's no sorrow in this town there's not wrong or right
Since I'm only passing through I'll be leaving by night
Just can't figure why I should be all alone people all around me
Could this be then end
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
They seek fortune deep in the night, I ask why
Living in a daydream
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
Could this be the end
Could this be the end?
The Stylistics' song "Could This Be The End" is a melancholic and introspective reflection on the human experience of loneliness and curiosity about life's purpose. The singer of the song is walking down the street when he realizes that he is surrounded by people yet feels isolated and disconnected from the world around him. He observes children playing and people going about their lives, but he is unable to understand their motivations and desires. Instead, he is lost in a daydream, questioning the meaning of life and contemplating whether this loneliness, this feeling of being separate from the rest of humanity, could be the end of his journey.
The lyrics of the song convey a sense of isolation, melancholy, and existential angst. The repetition of the phrase "Could this be the end" emphasizes the singer's uncertainty and doubt about his own place in the world. Despite being surrounded by others, he feels alone and disconnected, unable to understand their inner lives or find a sense of connection with them. The song suggests that this sense of isolation and confusion is a common human experience, one that we all must navigate as we try to make sense of the world and our place in it.

Thom produced this,
but didn’t write it.
It was written by
Joseph B.Jefferson,
Bruce Hawes,
and Charles Simmons.
Russell sang the lead,
and the background vocals were by
Thom,Kenny Gamble,
Bunny Sigler,
Carl Helm,
Phil Hurtt,
Linda Creed,Barbara Ingram,
Carla Benson,and
Evette Benton.
Thom didn’t liked the rest of the
group’s voices,
and only wanted to work with
Russell because he believed in his falsetto voice.
As a result,
the group didn’t sing on the three albums he produced.

Barbara Ingram,
Carla Benson,
and
Evette Benton also known as
“The Sigma Sweethearts”
are the other women singing background on this along with
Linda Creed,
Thom Bell,
and his other friends.
Thom used the Sigma Sweethearts for most of his recordings to sing extra background vocals when
the male vocal groups sang too low.
Thom discovered them back in
1970.
Gamble & Huff used them as well.

Russell Thompkins Golden voice. His voice was so amazing. Thom Bell saw a big future in him...and him alone! He actually wanted Russ to leave the guys or get new singers but Russell was determined to stay faithful to the 4 guys...Arion, James D, James S and Herb. I actually love this arrangement and song. Russell hits those high runs like it's nothing new for him. What a singer. And he still is at age 71 with his guest singing with famous groups and with his new Stylistics. You go Russell ! 🎶🌟🎶
