Liquid Spirit
Gregory Porter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Un re-route the rivers
Let the dammed water be
There's some people down the way that's thirsty
So let the liquid spirit free

The people are thirsty
'Cause of man's unnatural hand
Watch what happens when the people catch wind
When the water hits the banks of that hard dry land
Clap your hands now
Go 'head and clap your hands now
Clap your hands now
Go 'head and clap your hands no, hmm

Get ready for the wave
It might strike like the final flood
The people haven't drank is so long
The water won't even make mud

After it comes, it might come with a steady flow
Grab the roots of the tree
Down by the river, fill your cup when your spirit's low

Clap your hands now
Go 'head and clap your hands now
Clap your hands now
Clap your hands now

Dip down and take a drank
And fill your water tank
Dip down and take a drank
And fill your water tank

Un re-route the rivers
Let the dammed water be
There's some people down the way that's thirsty
Let the liquid spirits free

The folk are thirsty
Because of man's unnatural hand
Watch what happens when the people catch wind
Of the water hitting banks of hard dry land

Clap your hands now
Clap your hands now
Go 'head and clap your hands now
Clap your hands now

Get down and take a drink
And fill your water tank
Dip down and take a drink
And fill your water tank

Liquid spirit
Liquid spirit
Liquid spirit
Liquid spirit

Clap your hands now
Liquid spirit

Overall Meaning

In "Liquid Spirit" by Gregory Porter, the singer is urging someone to un-restrict rivers and let the water flow freely to a people who have been thirsting. The song highlights the forgotten importance of water to the people, and how the interference of man has affected nature in a negative way. The song inspires people to think about the preciousness of water and the importance of letting nature run her course.

At the core of Porter's message is the idea that 'liquids' have spirits of their own and that they hold secrets of life. The "Liquid Spirit" is a metaphor for freedom, love and spiritual energy. By freeing up a river, you unleash not only its physical waters, but also the spirits contained within, releasing something very powerful and nourishing in people's lives. The singer is essentially asking humanity to reconnect with water and the essences of life that it carries. The song characterizes water as an enthusiastic force, traveling to revitalize those it meets along its path.

Just discovered Jazz? Welcome to the source of all Hip Hop, Rap, Garage, Hardcore, Drum and Bass, Jungle. This is the roots....Brilliant

@inquireorhack

While jazz has certainly influenced all these genres, Jungle/DnB actually descended from Caribbean music, such as reggae and dub (hence the basslines). Hip Hop came from electrofunk, which descended from funk, soul and R&B, ultimately from the blues.

@olskl

....and jazz came from enslaved African's cries for deity blessing.

After listening to Gregory Porter, his tunes brought an inner groove out that I haven't felt since I was a young girl. Then, "I listened to his words." Words of sharing ones love, praying for peace, having hope & giving from the heart. Great Listening.
