This Head I Hold
Electric Guest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They call me a little wound up
See, I'm upset because I've always been stuck
But I don't know what it is I'm without
Guess I'm in love with always feeling down
(See, the problem was I) was fully consumed
By all of the petty things that I couldn't do
All of the plastic products, shows and woes
But I didn't ever show, I let it go
So I listen while I'm told

Sit back, don't think
Get high, take drink
Sit back, don't think
The more I listen, the deeper I sink

And, ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
This head that I hold, oh, it's so tired
And I say, oh, no, I go higher
And I say, ooh, what's it gon', what's it gonna be
Make me say, ooh, what's it gon', what's it gonna be
I'm feelin' so cold, what they want, what they want from me
Make me say ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (what they want, what they gonna be)

So find me stuck in the scene
I wanna get out, but there's no in-between
So I sit back as I watch the crowd go
Never assuming that I've sunken so low
(See, the problem was this) if I wanna be free
I gotta stop playin' round and runnin' from me
'Cause all of the plastic products, shows and woes
They got my head feelin' low, no room to grow
So I listen while I'm told

Sit back, don't think
Get high, take drink
Don't feel, just go
If you listen carefully, then you won't feel so low

Sit back, don't think
The more I listen, the deeper I sink

And, ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
This head that I hold, no, it's so tired
And I say, oh, no, I go higher
And I say, ooh, what's it gon', what's it gonna be
Make me say, ooh, what's it gon', what's it gonna be
I'm feelin' so cold, what they want, what they want from me?
Make me say ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh (what they want, what they gonna be)

I'm sinking, ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
Get no sleep, meet the vampire
And I say, ooh, no, I go higher
And I say, ooh, I go higher
And I say, ooh, a-ooh, I go higher
This head that I hold, no, it's so tired
And I say, ooh, no, I go higher

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Electric Guest's song "This Head I Hold" explore themes of frustration, feeling stuck, and a desire for freedom. The singer describes feeling wound up and upset, unable to figure out what they're missing. They're consumed by petty things they can't control and masked emotions, but they don't show it. They listen while they're told to sit back and not think, get high, take a drink, and not feel, but that only sinks them deeper.

The singer wants to break free from the scene they're stuck in, but they feel there's no in-between. They watch the crowd go by, sinking lower and lower. They know they need to stop playing around and running from themselves to be free, but they feel like they've got no room to grow. The more they listen, the deeper they sink, but they keep going higher, singing of feeling tired, cold, and sinking. They meet the vampire, but still, they keep going higher.

Overall, the song can be interpreted as a commentary on the desire for freedom and the frustrating feeling of being stuck. The lyrics suggest a longing for a way out, but feeling like there's no escape. The repeated refrain of going higher despite feeling tired and sinking can be interpreted as a message of hope, suggesting that even in the darkest moments, there's still a way to rise above.

I can't believe I went 10 years without knowing about this. What a gem

@Flip283

He is watching everyone try to be something they are not. (Everyone is fake.) He runs away and finds himself to be down to earth. (He finds happiness and comfort in the simplicity of life in love with someone having a child.) He runs back to show everyone he can be just as good as they are. (This is the way the world is. Everyone wants to be someone and wants to appear as if they are special.) He sees what really matters at the end of the video. Not to mention the judges, which are really just everyone around us judging us on a daily basis.

It doesn't matter who we are or what we want to be. He realized true happiness was something greater than being selfish. At least that's what I'm getting...

Yeah. What HE said.😜

The meaning of the video was pretty straightforward to me. The fact that his dream family faded away in the end clearly highlighted a final point. That by copying the dancers before him to make the judges happy, he sacrificed his own personal happiness. The larger meaning is that it's perfectly fine to be original and not always listen to what society tells us to do. He says 'The more I listen, the deeper I sink'. Deep stuff.
