I Remember
The Roots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I drew a 2 of hearts from a deck of cards
A stock trick from my empty repertoire
Another hopeless story never read at all
I'm better off looking for the end
Where the credits are
It's a pain living life against the grain
I'm looking back and y'all look the same
Troy, Mark, and little what's his name
Memory is rerunning it all
It's the flight of my fall and it's right on the wall

I remember
Can you remember?
How it was
I do
Remember, do you?

I remember
Can you remember?
How it was
I do
Remember, do you?

I used to ride the train to the same two stops
And look at the graffiti on the rooftops
Like the same song playing on the jukebox
Joint called "Faded Polaroids In A Shoebox"
Regardless to what the cadence is
It can't be forgotten like old acquaintances
I realize how depressing of a place it is
And when I notice my reflection whose face it is

I remember
Can you remember?
How it was
I do
Remember, do you?

I remember
Can you remember?
How it was
I do
Remember, do you?

I remember
Can you remember?
How it was
I do
Remember, do you?

I remember
Can you remember?
How it was
I do
Remember, do you?

It's only human to express the way you really feel
But that same humanity is my Achilles' heel
A leopard can't change his spots and never will
So I'm forever ill
Now I can never chill
What's keeping me from breaking out like Benadryl
When my baptism of fire resulted in a kill
Sometimes it's as cut and dry as a business deal
You gotta cause the blood of a close friend to spill
But you remember still

Overall Meaning

In 'I Remember,' the Roots rapper Black Thought reflects on memories of his past, his struggles growing up, and how certain moments are forever imprinted in his psyche. The lyrics ''I drew a 2 of hearts from a deck of cards, A stock trick from my empty repertoire, Another hopeless story never read at all'' suggests a feeling of redundancy and lack of purpose, as if the singer is stuck on a treadmill of monotony. He feels like his life is a hopeless story that is never even read, and constantly seeks out the 'end' or the 'credits' where he thinks everything will make sense.

Black Thought then goes on to reminisce about his daily commute to two same stops on the train, where he would look at graffiti on rooftops and listen to the same song on the jukebox. He calls this place a 'depressing' one, where he sees his own reflection and wonders whose face it belongs to. The lyrics suggest that he was going through a difficult time and the same mundane routine did not make it any easier.

Towards the end of the song, he talks about how expressing himself and being true to his emotions is his 'Achilles heel.' He feels like he is forever ill and can never relax or be completely at peace. The lyrics ''Sometimes it's as cut and dry as a business deal, You gotta cause the blood of a close friend to spill, But you remember still'' suggest that he has made difficult decisions in the past where he has lost close friends, and even though he remembers these moments still, it's a part of his life he can never change.
