River Song
Dennis Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walkin' down by the river
Water running through my knees
(Ahhh)
River, oh river moves so free
(Ahhh)
Oh mighty river endlessly

Oo mighty river
I would love to be like you
Oo lonely river
Has not got the time to say

I was born into the city life
It's all that I've ever known
You know it's rough gettin' round this place
So crowded I can hardly breathe

You can only see about a block or two
In L. A. that's the truth
I'm lookin' for some country life
Some kickin' room no more city life
I want the river

Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river
(I got to get away I got to get away I got to get away)
Rollin' rollin' rollin' on

It breaks my heart to see the city
I wonder why it ain't pretty
Oh I want to cry, want to cry
Come on you've got to do it do it do it

You got to run away you got to run away
You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away

You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away

You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away

You got to do it do it do it
You got to run away
You got to run away

Overall Meaning

The song River Song by Dennis Wilson speaks to his desire to escape the hectic nature of city life and find solace in the peaceful nature of the river. The opening lines set the stage for this sentiment, as he walks by the river with the water running through his knees. The repetition of "River, oh river" and "Oo mighty river" throughout the song highlights his admiration for the river's freedom and endlessness.

Wilson contrasts this with the suffocating nature of the city, expressing his frustration with the crowding and lack of space. He longs for the open country life, where there is more "kicking room" and he can breathe more easily. The repetition of "Rollin' rollin' rollin' on river" towards the end reinforces his desire to escape to the river and leave the city behind.

Overall, River Song is an ode to the soothing nature of nature and the desire to escape the confines of city life. It speaks to a theme of searching for simplicity and tranquility in a chaotic world.

Amazing song. Sat here in Northampton, England, July 2023....still amazing. RIP Dennis.

@Sami-ArtAus

This is one of the best songs I've ever heard. If only he had toured it and released You Are so Beautiful as a single. He would've been by far the most successful BBoy, because he had MORE than the others. He had the handsomeness, sex appeal, charm, humbleness and charisma - the others lacked. He also had a sexy raspy voice, wrote great songs and had a real presence. He really felt the music and moved to the rhythm. He should have been out front from the very start. His solo career could've then had a different trajectory. Sadly, he didn't believe in himself enough and neither did the others. I wish more people had told him how great he was. He was really special.🌹🌊❤️

Much more appealing band with Dennis out front instead of that yucky Mike Love

Dennis was truly the George Harrison of the group. Musically kept to the background behind Brian, Mike and Carl, as well as being his own person away from the group. But when given his own chance at a solo effort, created something rather beautiful and timeless. Would've loved to have heard more from him, what a waste.

PLUS jOHN lENNON AND PAUL MC CARTNEY!

@johndoyle2429

I actually thought more of a Jim morrision from the Doors. Dennis Wilson talent was overlooked by the beachboys. During the 70's.

Something hauntingly beautiful about Dennis Wilson.  I am a huge fan.
