Shake Your Moneymaker
Fleetwood Mac Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Shake your moneymaker, take one)
(Remake, take one)

Shake your moneymaker
Shake your moneymaker
You got to shake your moneymaker, yeah
Shake your moneymaker
You got to shake your moneymaker
And then

I got a gal that lives up on a hill
I got a gal that lives up on a hill
Says she'll let me roll her, but I don't believe she will

She won't shake her moneymaker
Won't shake her moneymaker
I want to roll her, I keep beggin'
She won't shake her moneymaker
Won't shake her money maker
She won't, oh-ha!

I got a girl, and she just won't be true
I got a girl, and she just won't be true
Won't let me do the one good thing I tell her to
She won't shake her moneymaker
Won't shake her moneymaker
Won't shake her moneymaker
She won't shake her moneymaker
Won't shake her moneymaker
She won't

Overall Meaning

The song "Shake Your Moneymaker" is a lively and upbeat blues track, that has been covered by many artists including The Black Crowes. It is a song about personal expression and freedom, encouraging listeners to dance and move to their own beat. The repeated usage of the phrase "Shake your moneymaker" refers to the body, particularly the hips which in the 1920s was referenced to "a woman's sexual and reproductive capacity, and specifically her ability to reproduce for a man who could earn her living." The song was written in the 1960s, a time when youth culture and counterculture was blossoming, and music was being used as a tool for expression and rebellion.

The lyrics tell the story of a man who is trying to convince two women to dance and let loose. The first girl lives on a hill and he says he'll roll her, but he doesn't think she'll let him. The second girl won't be true and won't do the one good thing he tells her to do which is to shake her moneymaker. The man portrays the two women as rigid and unwilling to let loose, forcing him to constantly "beg" for them to move and dance. The lyrics are delivered with a playful tone and the repeated use of "won't shake her moneymaker" gives the song a catchy and memorable hook.

Overall, "Shake Your Moneymaker" is a song that celebrates self-expression, movement and dance. It encourages the listener to let loose and enjoy themselves, unapologetically. The song is an example of the power of music to inspire and move people, and a testament to the enduring legacy of blues music.

I had the privilege of being at a live gig in Ipswich in 1967/8 where during a pause in play I shouted "Moneymaker", and to my amazement, they played it there and then! Still sends shivers down my spine thinking about it. Great song, great band.

@The_DC_Kid

Cool! I have a feeling they already had that one in the cylinder and ready to fire. Wish I'd been there! RIP, Peter.

Jeremy Spencer vocals & slide guitar on this great Elmore James song.

@skykiss12

Jeremy is on vocal and slide guitar. His voice is not as bluesy as Peter's but his slide guitar playing is marvellous. Reminds me of Brian Jones.
