Country Girl
Faron Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met you my country girl, you didn't have a thing
I fell in love, I dressed you up, then I bought the ring
I was teachin' you to love, you were learnin' fine,
Then one day you learned too much and it poisoned your sweet mind

Now you've gone and left me, you're with somebody new
But I wonder if you told him, I bought the clothes on you
When you two are dancin' and you whisper soft and sweet
I wonder if you'll tell him, I bought the shoes on your feet

Now I've lost my country girl to a city love affair
He built you up, you fell for him, you didn't treat me fair
You think that he's a dream come true, he says he loves you so
But wait until the word gets out, I taught you all that you know

Now you've gone and left me, you're with somebody new
But I wonder if you told him, I bought the clothes on you
When you two are dancin' and you whisper soft and sweet
I wonder if you'll tell him, I bought the shoes on your feet

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Country Girl" by Faron Young narrate a story of a man who fell in love with a woman from the countryside. At the beginning of the relationship, the girl had nothing, but the man fell in love with her and bought her clothes and even a ring. He taught her how to love, and the girl was learning well. However, at some point, the girl learned too much, and it "poisoned" her mind.

The woman then leaves him for someone else, a city man who built her up, but the man wonders if she tells him that it was him who bought her clothes and shoes that she wears when they're dancing. The man feels betrayed and thinks that the woman didn't treat him fairly. He also believes that the new man is just a fling and that the woman will eventually realize what he did for her.

The song expresses feelings of betrayal, disappointment, and heartbreak. The man thought he had found the perfect partner in the woman he loved, but in the end, she left him for someone else. The lyrics also highlight the fact that people can change, and sometimes the person we love can become someone different, someone we don't recognize or understand.
