The Edge of Heaven
Wham! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would lock you up
But I could not bear to hear you
Screaming to be set free
I would chain you up
If I'd thought you'd swear
The only one that mattered was me, me, me
I would strap you up
But don't worry baby
You know I wouldn't hurt you 'less you wanted me to
It's too late to stop
Won't the heavens save me?
My daddy said the devil looks a lot like you

You take me to the edge of heaven
Tell me that my soul's forgiven
Hide you baby's eyes and we can,
You take me to the edge of heaven
One last time might be forever
When the passion dies,
It's just a matter of time before my heart is
Looking for a home

I'm like a maniac, at the end of the day
I'm like a doggie barking at your door
So come take me back to the place you stay
And maybe we can do it once more

You say I'm dangerous
But don't worry baby
I get excited at the things that you do
And there's a place for us in a dirty movie
'cause no-one does it better than me and you

You take me to the edge of heaven
Tell me that my soul's forgiven
Hide your baby's eyes and we can,
You take me to the edge of heaven
One last time might be forever
Please don't tell me lies
It's just a matter of time before my heart is
Looking for a home

I ain't got no more worries
I'm gonna spend some times with you
Loving you takes such courage
And don't you think that I know it

You take me to the edge of heaven
You tell me that my soul's forgiven
Hide your baby's eyes and we can,
You take me to the edge of heaven
One last time might be forever
Don't you tell me lies, because believe me baby
One day you'll wake up on your own.

I ain't got no more worries
I ain't got no more time for you
Loving you takes such courage
Everyone's got their eyes on you
I ain't got no more worries
I ain't got no more time for you
Loving you takes such courage
And don't you think that I know it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wham!'s song "The Edge of Heaven" are a mix of intriguing and challenging elements displayed in the singer’s confession of his feelings. The overall tone of the song appears to be a plea for a lover's attention, no matter the cost. The opening lines are controversial, where the singer confesses how badly he wants to control the person he loves despite acknowledging that it is unacceptable behavior. He expresses a desire to restrain his lover with chains and straps, but he's also willing to let them go if they scream in demand for it. However, the lyrics twist the tone as the song progresses. He admits how much he wants his lover to be with him, and he longs for them to take him to their edge of heaven. There is desperation in the tone as the singer reveals that all he wants is one last moment with his lover, even if it may be forever.

The chorus "take me to the edge of heaven, where my soul is forgiven" is the epitome of the desire for a special connection. The chorus depicts the singer's yearning for his lover to take him to that place where they are purely happy, with a hint of obsession. He is incredibly grateful for their courage, knowing full well how much he's asking of them and how much it means to him. Finally, the song ends with the singer admitting that he has no more worries, implying that he's okay with the consequences of his feelings, no matter how it ends.

Who else agrees this one was one of their best songs?

@laminage

Me! I still remember watching him on American Bandstand in 1983 at 16. Even then he was a Diamond in The Rough. I loved the UK Audiences in their Videos. They were more loose and upbeat.

I agree

@duckydan52

Definitely in the top 3. I think "Wake me up before you go go" and "Freedom" would rank just a little higher. But not by much.

My mom is a huge George fan and she went to one of his last concerts. There was a rumor afterwards that he would be at a specific bar, but my mom didn't think anything of it so she went someplace different. 30 mins after she arrived, her fiancée taps her shoulder and whispered, "hey look, its george" He came and sat right next to her and she says he was the most polite, kind person she's ever met.
