Woodlawn
Ampere Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It replays everyday and every time I yell the warning, “please turn back!” Sometimes, I can see you in the shadows; I can hear you in the echoes. I can feel you in the darkness. Sometimes, I can see you in the mirror. I can see you in my own eyes... and it scares me to think that somewhere... somehow... you're not breathing, and I miss you. And I will never be alone when I still see you in my dreams... a minute for each mile, please turn back... a lifetime for each second of broken glass. Open, open, open up your eyes, and come back.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics from Ampere's song "Woodlawn" depict a haunting sense of loss and longing. The singer warns someone to turn back, as they are heading down a dangerous path. The sense of danger is intensified by the imagery of seeing the person in the shadows, hearing them in echoes, and feeling their presence in the darkness. The singer also sees the person in the mirror and in their own eyes, emphasizing the closeness of their relationship.

However, there is a sense of tragedy in the lyrics as well. The singer is scared to think that the person they are addressing may no longer be alive. Despite this, they find comfort in the fact that they can still see them in their dreams. The repetition of the phrase "a minute for each mile" and "a lifetime for each second of broken glass" serves to emphasize the weight of the situation.

Overall, the lyrics of "Woodlawn" explore the themes of loss, grief, and longing. The singer's intense emotions are palpable throughout the song, and the repeated warnings serve to further emphasize the sense of danger and urgency.

Line by Line Meaning

It replays everyday and every time I yell the warning, 'please turn back!'
Every day, I relive this moment and I scream out a plea for you to turn back

Sometimes, I can see you in the shadows; I can hear you in the echoes. I can feel you in the darkness.
Occasionally, I catch a glimpse of you lurking in the shadows, I hear your voice in the echoes of my mind, and I sense your presence in the pitch blackness.

Sometimes, I can see you in the mirror. I can see you in my own eyes... and it scares me to think that somewhere... somehow... you're not breathing, and I miss you.
Other moments, I see your reflection staring back at me and realize that you are a part of me. The thought of you being gone terrifies me and the loss of you is deeply felt.

And I will never be alone when I still see you in my dreams... a minute for each mile, please turn back... a lifetime for each second of broken glass.
Even when I'm asleep, you haunt my dreams, walking alongside me. I would do anything to travel back in time and force you to turn around. For each mile that separates us, a single minute seems like an eternity. And for each shard of broken glass that symbolize our shattered relationship, I feel as though a lifetime has passed

Open, open, open up your eyes, and come back.
I beg for you to wake up, to see the destruction that has been wrought, and to come back to me so that we can rebuild what has been lost.

An all time favorite from my teens that really helped me cope with the loss of my father many years later

It's nice to finally listen to a real screamo band for once. I'm tired of people recommending post-hardcore bands and bands that are nowhere near to this genre. This kind of music should be appreciated more, and the term "screamo" shouldn't be thrown around to describe every band with a little bit of screaming here and there. That's a complete insult to real screamo, it's not something to be taken lightly. So many teenagers are growing up listening to Pierce The Veil, Sleeping With Sirens, Bring Me The Horizon, Get Scared, etc. and they're being told those bands are screamo. It's depressing, really. Especially when I'm the only sixteen year old who seems to know what a real screamo band sounds like.

You're not the only one. But what else would you expect, this is a lot heavier and doesn't have polish, it's really an acquired taste. Also, those bands are barely post hardcore, if you want real post hardcore listen to Glassjaw, PTV and SWS are too poppy, and BMTH is metalcore.

@TheSpookychick

Alpha Zalgo Yep. I've listened to Glassjaw before. They're absolutely incredible. :) And, holy shit! I can't believe how old my comment is, haha. I'm 18 now, by the way. 😀
