On My Own
Samantha Barks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him 'til morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own

Overall Meaning

Samantha Barks's song "On My Own" is an emotional and poignant ballad that explores the theme of unrequited love. The song is part of the musical Les Misérables, and it showcases the character Eponine's deep and painful feelings for Marius, a man she knows will never love her back.

The opening verse of the song speaks to Eponine's deep desire to have Marius by her side. She walks with him till morning and even imagines feeling his arms around her. In the next verse, Eponine describes the beauty of the world around her, capturing the idea that even in the midst of her deepest pain, the world around her remains beautiful because of her feelings for Marius. She knows she is only talking to herself and that Marius is blind to her love for him, but she still holds onto the hope that there is a way for them to be together.

The final verse of the song shows Eponine's acceptance of her unrequited love. She understands that Marius will never love her back, and she accepts that she must go on living her life without him. But despite this acceptance, Eponine's love for Marius remains strong, and she sings the closing refrain "I love him, I love him, I love him" as a testament to her enduring devotion.

Overall, "On My Own" is a deeply emotional and moving song that explores the pain of unrequited love and the power of love to inspire hope in the face of despair.

The genius of "Les Misérables", is in the fact that EVERYONE is miserable: miserable in work, miserable in life, miserable in politics, miserable in the army, and yes.. miserable in love. Eponine's misery is so palpable to anyone on this planet who sought love. We have all been there, and we have all sung this song.

Actually, ‘les misérables’ more closely translates to ‘the wretched’.

“In any case, there is a point where the poor and the wicked become mixed up and lumped together in the one fateful word: Les Misérables (the wretched). Whose fault is this?”

So even the Thénardiers would fall under the umbrella.

That is just so succinct!

Victor Hugo is such an amazing author to wrote this novel where the musical and movie is based.

@THEShogunBallistic

Ya the phantom in my mind told me to check out all the despair today, the despair that provoked others to move towards impacting each other in the worse possible ways. I want to encourage the opposite of that. I think I still have a way to go.
