Porcelain
Moby Lyrics

(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
In my dreams I'm dying all the time
Then I wake, it's kaleidoscopic mind
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to lie
So this is goodbye?
This is goodbye
(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
Tell the truth, you've never wanted me
Tell me
In my dreams I'm jealous all the time
When I wake, I'm going out of my mind
Going out of my mind
(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
(Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright)
The lyrics to Moby's song Porcelain are full of emotion and turmoil, exploring themes of love, loss, and regret. The song is sung from the perspective of the singer, who is plagued by dreams of dying and feelings of jealousy. The line "in my dreams I'm dying all the time" suggests that the singer feels like they are constantly losing a part of themselves, which is a feeling that is compounded by their feelings of jealousy. The line "I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to lie, so this is goodbye?" is a poignant one, highlighting the singer's regret and the fact that they feel like they have no choice but to say goodbye to their loved one.
The repeated refrain "Hey, hey, hey, woman, it's alright" can be interpreted in a few different ways, but it seems to be a way for the singer to reassure themselves (and their loved one) that everything will be alright, even though they know deep down that it won't be. The line "tell the truth, you've never wanted me, tell me" is a plea for honesty, and highlights the fact that the singer is struggling with their own insecurities and doubts about their relationship.
Overall, "Porcelain" is a powerful song that explores complex emotions and relationships. The lyrics are full of honesty, vulnerability, and pain, and Moby's haunting vocals only add to the emotional impact of the song.

This song reminds me of a friend I had, back in 2010. I was almost 17 and he was almost 18, and I saw him as a kind of mentor at the time. He liked this track a lot. I must have heard it a few times before then, but it was thanks to him that I started to appreciate just how amazing it is, and it remains one of my very favourite songs to this day. His musical interests were unique and varied, as he was someone who refused to label his tastes or limit himself to one genre, unlike many people at that age. He would listen to Moby, classic singer-songwriters, club house music, even some hip-hop, and had no preconceived notions against the songs that were popular on the radio at the time. His open-mindedness, about music and many other things, was refreshing.
We shared many of the same passions, like a love for stimulating ideas and great authors, physical fitness and reading and writing poetry. I admired his creative talents (he wrote some great poems but also dabbled in photography).
He had a unique way of being in the world. He was outgoing, but not bubbly or loud. He knew an enormous amount of people, but could just as well go clubbing as he could keep to himself and spend an afternoon just taking photos. He had a great curiosity about things, especially about people. He was very popular with the ladies, a quality that I was hoping I could learn from him or that would somehow be transmitted to me by mere proximity to him (it wasn't, haha).
He helped me break out of the rut of feeling lonely and misunderstood I was in at the time, and helped me get out into the world more and quench the intense thirst I had for new experiences and situations, as well as my desire for stimulating conversation.
Listening to this song takes me back to that intense and memorable time in my life, and more specifically to the Summer of 2010, when I was young, alive and in awe of the world.
