Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Destiny's Child Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
You know Dasher, and Dancer, and
Prancer, and Vixen..
Comet, and Cupid, and

Donner and Blitzen..
But do you recall...?
The most famous reindeer of all
(music break)

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it,
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say,
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer,
"You'll go down in history!"

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
Rudolph
We love you boy
Rudolph the red nose reindeer

Bringing us christmas joy
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say,
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,

Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,

"You'll go down in history!"
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Rudolph
We love you boy

Rudolph the red nose reindeer
Spreading the christmas joy
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Rudolph

We love you boy
Rudolph the red nose reindeer
Bringing us christmas joy
Then one foggy Christmas Eve

Santa came to say,
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Dasher, Dancer,

Prancer, Vixen,
Comet, Cupid,
Donner, and Blitzen..
But don't you forget,
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer..

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" tell the story of a reindeer with a unique physical characteristic that separates him from his peers. Rudolph is initially ostracized by the other reindeer because of his shining red nose. The other reindeer used to laugh and call him names to prevent him from joining them in any reindeer games. However, on one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa calls on Rudolph to guide his sleigh because of his bright nose. This act of valor from Rudolph leads the other reindeer to accept him and love him. The song ends with Rudolph being celebrated as the most famous reindeer of all, with his unique trait elevating him to legendary status.

The song was written in 1939 by Robert L. May, who was working at Montgomery Ward, a retail store in Chicago. May was tasked with creating a Christmas story to give away to customers during the holiday season. May's idea for Rudolph was initially rejected, but his brother-in-law, Johnny Marks (who was a songwriter), encouraged him to write a song about the character. This prompted May to write the lyrics, and Marks wrote the melody, resulting in the song we know today.
