Time of the Assassins
Charlotte Gainsbourg Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walk in a line
I see where I'm goin'
I turn inside out
The days that I've known

I face to myself
And give up the ghost
I turn in my mind
What time already knows

In the time of the assassins they say "Hallelujah"
It doesn't take a miracle to raise a heart from the dead

I sift through the ash
I look for a sign
I open the wound
That keeps me in line

The shoulder that turns
The flame that goes out
The chapter I close
There's no point to it now

In the time of the assassins they say "Hallelujah"
It doesn't take a miracle to raise a heart from the dead

And can something changed
And still feel the same
The beginning's the end
I start all over again

In the time of the assassins they say "Hallelujah"
It doesn't take a miracle to raise a heart from the dead

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Charlotte Gainsbourg's song "Time of the Assassins" explore the idea of personal transformation and the power of change. The singer acknowledges her past, including the good and the bad days, but admits that she must move on and face her new life with strength and resilience. She understands that there are wounds that need to be opened and healed for real progress to be made, so she must sift through the ashes of her past in search of a sign that will lead her forward.

The song title and repeated use of the phrase "in the time of the assassins" suggests that she is living in a tumultuous and dangerous era, but she remains hopeful even amid the chaos. The lyrics suggest a belief in the transformative power of change and the importance of embracing the unknown. The lines "And can something changed / And still feel the same / The beginning's the end / I start all over again" suggest that even though change is possible, it may not be easy. Nevertheless, she is willing to wholeheartedly embrace the new beginning that awaits her.

Overall, "Time of the Assassins" is a song about transformation, resilience, and hope. The singer understands that change is difficult, but believes in herself and the power of transformation.

She's the child of 60's icons but she is so completely of her own time and her own self. A beautiful soul, I'm never disappointed by anything she does. She has the magic!

Another first hearing I love straight away. Charlotte has the same charisma as her Father Serge Gainsbourg. Both mesmerising to watch.

@chicklets4ever51

She may have inherited her father's charisma (there is something rather appealing about her pouty face), but she also inherited her mother's utter lack of singing ability. Whispering just doesn't cut it. Maybe in France, circa 1968, but even then...

@lindabeeston7408

chicklets4ever true, but I has a certain something I like all the same.

I literally cry every time I hear this song…I don’t know why, but it reminds me of sitting in history class, dazing off as my teacher speaks to the class…
I think Charlotte reminds me of my history teacher and I can’t help but think that every time I see her, which then this song comes to mind and brings up wonderful memories of that class.

@SphericalVacuum
