Wives And Lovers
Vic Damone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey! Little Girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you...
Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again
For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here...
Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Vic Damone's song "Wives and Lovers" tell the story of a woman who is advised to always be presentable for her husband when he comes home from work. The song emphasizes that even though she's married and has a ring on her finger, she still needs to capture her husband's attention by being a lover to him. Thus, she's advised to comb her hair and fix her makeup and wear something pretty to go along with it. The song also makes the point that wives shouldn't let their appearance go, even if they're tired at the end of the day, because there are always other women out there who are waiting to steal their husband's attention away.

The underlying message of the song is problematic, as it promotes a harmful stereotype that women are solely responsible for keeping their husbands satisfied and happy. The song implies that a woman must always look perfect and be a perfect wife, not for her own sake, but to keep her husband's attention and prevent him from straying away. The song reinforces traditional gender roles and the idea that women are not complete without a man, as the lyrics suggest that a woman's primary role is to be a devoted wife and lover.

I LOVE the Ultra Lounge series, and this is one of my favorite albums ... But this song man. Nice catchy tune and stuff, but DAMN is it sexist! :O

LOL, unfortunately you can say that for a fair amount of this music. Vic Damone himself wasn't the best guy in the world. Gotta put on your "I know this is problematic, but it's catchy and fun" glasses (earphones?) sometimes.

@LittleMissLounge Yeah, true enuf. This one just really jumped out at me this morning. My FAVORITE albums in the series are the purely music ones.
