Love/Paranoia
Tame Impala Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I may not be as honest as I ought to be
Now that, when the walls go up
I said it didn't worry me
But it hit me like an arrow
Babe, to know, I could just be paranoid
Won't quell the desire to know
What was really going on
"Does it really fucking matter, babe?"
Is all you can ask me
Okay, fair play, here we go

I've heard those words before
Are you sure it was nothing
'Cause it made me feel like dying inside
Never thought I was insecure, but it's pure
Didn't notice until I was in love for real
Am I really gonna cross the line
Just to find what you're typing?
If only I could read your mind
Oh, I'd be fine
I'd be normal
Now's my time
Gonna do it

And suddenly I'm the phony one
The only one with a problem
True love is bringing it out of me
The worst in me, and I know now
Do you remember the time we were
The time we were by the ocean?
I didn't care if it was day or night
The world was right where I wanted
Girl, I'm sorry
Babe I'm really, really sorry

Overall Meaning

In Love/Paranoia, Tame Impala explores the vulnerability that often comes with being in love. The singer admits that they may not be the most honest person, and even though they claimed that the walls going up didn't worry them, it hit them like an arrow. The singer expresses a desire to know what is truly going on and seemingly wrestles with feelings of paranoia. The line "never thought I was insecure, but it's pure" suggests that previously the singer may have thought themselves more confident in relationships, but in this instance, their feelings are genuine and raw. The singer even contemplates crossing boundaries to read their partner's messages. The song seems to highlight how love can strip away our defenses and leave us feeling exposed and unsure.

The lyrics also touch on the idea of true love bringing out the worst in us. The singer confesses that suddenly they feel like "the phony one" and that love is "bringing it out of me." This acknowledgment is a troubling yet honest reflection of how emotions can truly impact us. However, the song ends with an apology, and the memories of a blissful time that the singer shared with their partner. It leaves the question open-ended, will the singer cross the line to find out what's truly going on, or will they take the risk and trust their partner despite the paranoia?

well said!

Even though there are bands and musicians much more well known today than Tame Impala, 30 years in the future they will be talking about and still listening to Tame Impala, Cage the Elephant, My Morning Jacket, Foals, and other incredible indie and alternative musicians working right now while they will Not be talking about the current bubblegum poppy pop stars, or whatever you want to call them, and mindless mumble rappers of today.

@arlann-

Κ€oᴃer† F holy shit, I love My Morning Jacket and Cage the Elephant, you’re scarily right. I do believe that a lot of pretty popular bands such as Gorillaz and, well, Tame Impala will be remembered for a long time after release for just being good/great, though that isn’t the only reason!
