When You Die
MGMT Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not that nice
I'm mean and I'm evil
Don't call me nice
I'm gonna eat your heart out
I've got some work to do
Baby, I'm ready
I'm ready, ready, ready to blow my lid off

Yeah

Go fuck yourself
You heard me right
Don't call me nice again
Don't you have somewhere to be at seven thirty?
Baby, I'm ready
I'm ready, ready, ready to blow my brains out

You die
And words don't do anything
It's permanently night
And I won't feel anything
We'll all be laughing with you when you die
Words don't do anything
It's permanently night
And I won't feel anything
We'll all be laughing with you when you die

Go fuck yourself
I'm mean, not nice
You said it twice
You said it twice
Don't you have somewhere to be at seven thirty?

I've got some work to do
I'm gonna eat your heart out
I heard you the first time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to MGMT's song When You Die are a dark and satirical take on the human condition, as well as our obsession with mortality. The singer is unapologetically mean and evil, with no intention of being a nice person. They are eager to cause harm and to blow their lid off, indicating a brewing sense of frustration and anger within them. The repeated refrain of "Don't call me nice" highlights the singer's desire to be seen as something other than the social norm.

The song's chorus turns into a comment on human mortality and the futility of words when faced with the inevitability of death. The singer suggests that "words don't do anything" and that when we die, "It's permanently night / And I won't feel anything". The notion of not feeling anything in death subverts the idea of the afterlife, suggesting that we simply cease to exist. However, despite this bleak perspective, the singer still proclaims that "We'll all be laughing with you when you die". This could be interpreted as a commentary on the absurdity of life, or perhaps a hint of nihilism, suggesting that nothing ultimately matters.

Overall, MGMT's When You Die presents a dark and often unsettling interpretation of the human experience, utilizing irony and satire to comment on our mortality and the futility of words.

00:00 - dude wakes up, eats breakfast and goes to work - he performs magic at a bar
00:52 - the audience are concerned, a spark appears above the dude's head

02:05 - he wakes up in the hospital, barely in touch with reality. He has further hallucinations where people, patterns and behaviours relating to his day are coexisting.
03:13 - this part is really open to interpretation. The hallucinations relate to blood, skeletons and a possible representation of hell. This is followed by dissolution, suggesting he has died.
