Saudade da Bahia
Dorival Caymmi Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Dorival Caymmi's song "Saudade da Bahia" speak of a deep longing for the state of Bahia, Brazil. The first verse speaks of a regret for not heeding the advice of the singer's mother, who warned him about the treachery and illusions of the world. The second verse reflects on the intrinsic human need to confess one's deepest feelings to someone, and the sadness of not having anyone to confide in. The chorus laments the very idea of having to have saudade, or longing, for something, and questions why this is seen as a flaw.
The song captures the essence of nostalgia and homesickness, something that is familiar to many. The lyrics and melody are reminiscent of a simpler time, and the singer's voice conveys the sorrow that comes with a far-off memory. The sense of longing for a place or time that was once familiar but now feels distant is palpable throughout the song. The lyrics also touch upon the importance of having someone to confide in, to share one's deepest thoughts and feelings with, a need that is universal.

Oh, how I miss Bahia!
Oh, if only I had listened to my mother's advice!
"Well, don't leave your mother worried
A gente faz o que o coração dita
We do what our heart tells us to do
But this world is full of malice and illusion"
Ai, se eu escutasse hoje não sofria
Oh, if only I had listened today, I wouldn't be suffering
Ai, esta saudade dentro do meu peito
Oh, this longing in my heart
Oh, if having longing is a flaw
Eu pelo menos, mereço o direito
At least I deserve the right
To have someone to confide in
Ponha-se no meu lugar
Put yourself in my shoes
E veja como sofre um homem infeliz
And see how an unhappy man suffers
Que teve que desabafar
Who had to vent
Telling everyone what no one says
Vejam que situação
Look at this situation
E vejam como sofre um pobre coração
And see how a poor heart suffers
Pobre de quem acretida
Poor those who believe
That glory and money bring happiness

Ah, how I long for Bahia
Ah, if I'd only listened to what mama told me
"Babe, don't leave your worried mother
We do what our heart tells us
But this world is made of wickedness and illusion"
Ah, if I'd only listened, I wouldn't be suffering today
Ah, this longing in my breast
Ah, if longing is missing part of ourselves
Then at least I deserve
To have someone to whom to confess myself
Put yourself in my place
And see how suffers the unhappy man
Who had to vent,
Telling everyone what nobody says
Look at that situation
And see how a poor heart suffers
Poor is the heart that hinges its happiness
On glory and money.

Oh! Meu Grande Caymmi!
@SamuelMachadoFilho
ISRC: BREMI-5700077.
