Heavenfaced
The National Lyrics

In my mind, I am in your arms
I wish someone would take my place
Can't face heaven all heavenfaced
No one's careful all the time
If you lose me, I'm gonna die
How completely high was I?
I was off by a thousand miles
Hit the ceiling, then you fall
Things are tougher than we are
I could walk out, but I won't
In my mind, I am in your arms
I wish someone would take my place
Can't face heaven all heavenfaced
Let's go wait out in the fields with the ones we love
Let's go wait out in the fields with the ones we love
Let's go wait out in the fields with the ones we love
Let's go wait out in the fields with the ones we love
She's a griever and I believe her
It's not a fever, it's a freezer
I believe her, I'm a griever now
She's a griever and I believe her
It's not a fever, it's a freezer
I believe her, I'm a griever now
Because we'll all arrive in heaven alive
We'll all arrive
Because we'll all arrive in heaven alive
We'll all arrive
"Heavenfaced" by The National discusses losing oneself in love and finding it difficult to leave despite being aware that the relationship is self-destructive. The singer is aware that the relationship they're in is toxic, but they can't seem to navigate the breakup. The line "I could walk out, but I won't" is an example of this. To the singer, it's better to live in ignorance and continue to be with their loved one than to face the possibility of being in heaven all heaven-faced. The singer clearly doesn't believe in heaven, but rather sees it as a metaphor for the supposed bliss and happiness associated with being in love. The track embodies the forlorn, raging quality of someone under the grasp of a relationship they can't escape.
Additionally, the song has an interesting use of imagery. The line "Let's go wait out in the field with the ones we love" can be viewed as a reference to the world outside of their relationship. The field is representative of the endless opportunities and possibilities that are waiting for the singer if they can leave this relationship behind. It's a huge indication of what the singer desires, a free space around to live without any bond. The song is a thoughtful commentary on what it feels like to be caught up in a relationship that is unhealthy and uncertain. The latter portion of the song is a reflection on what could have been after the singer has left the relationship. The singer now believes in the pain he saw his lover long before it crushed them completely.
