Warning Sign
Eddie Rabbitt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw that warning sign
But I paid no mind
I just kept on
Rolling on

I saw that warning sign
But I had no time
I was
Headin' for your arms

I saw that warning sign
But I just went blind
Never read a word
That it said

Woe is me
Drivin' down this dead-end street
I must be out of my head

Danger, heartbreak ahead
Danger, heartbreak ahead
I never read a word it said
But it said, "Danger, heartbreak ahead"

I saw that warning sign
It was in your eyes
It was flashing off and on

I saw that warning sign
But I kissed your lips
I just couldn't do no wrong

I saw that warning sign
And it felt so fine
I fall in love with every word you say

Woe is me
Drivin' down this dead-end street
I must be out of my head

Danger, heartbreak ahead
Danger, heartbreak ahead
I never read a word it said
But it said, "Danger, heartbreak ahead"

I saw that warning sign
But I just went blind
Never read a word
That it said

Woe is me
Drivin' down this dead-end street
I must be out of my head

Danger, heartbreak ahead
Danger, heartbreak ahead
I never read a word it said
But it said, "Danger, heartbreak ahead"

Danger ahead

Overall Meaning

The song "Warning Sign" by Eddie Rabbitt is a cautionary tale about a person who ignores the signs that they should stay away from someone they love. In the verses, Rabbitt sings about seeing a warning sign, but disregarding it because he was too focused on being with the person he loves. He knows that danger and heartbreak may be ahead, but he cannot resist the temptation. Rabbitt describes feeling out of his mind and driving down a dead-end street, both symbolic of the danger he is facing by pursuing this person. However, he remains blind to the warning signs and ultimately ends up getting hurt.

The chorus of the song reinforces the danger and heartbreak warning. Rabbitt mentions that he never read the warning sign, but he knew it was there. He acknowledges that the sign was flashing in his loved one's eyes, but he was too infatuated to listen. The repetition of the phrase "danger, heartbreak ahead" emphasizes the severity of the situation and the potential consequences of ignoring warning signs.

"Warning Sign" explores themes of love, infatuation, and caution. It warns listeners to pay attention to red flags and not to ignore the signs that could lead to heartbreak. It also illustrates the pull of attraction and the difficulty of making rational decisions when emotions are involved.

I love the rockabilly style of this song, it's so fun to listen to. Eddie had so many great songs but I don't hear them on the radio. "Drivin' My Life Away", "I Love A Rainy Night" and "Two Dollars In The Jukebox" are great songs, too, but he had so many more that I wish would get played.
