The heart, soul and hot sauce of jazz. Thanks for posting.

Great trumpetplaying of the early genious Louis Armstrong.

Esteban Venegas

it is not a trumpet

James Irwin

Someone once claimed that this was the closest recording to how Buddy Bolden sounded playing the trumpet.

The cornet is a very different instrument than the trumpet, it has an oval bore unlike the round one of a trumpet and a more mellow sound.

Sorry to nitpick, but you mean to say conical, not oval. No wind instrument that I know of has an oval bore. That would be an interesting experiment though.

And of course Louis himself is on cornet here, not on trumpet.

I think it was recorded on 12 November 1925. The rest of the band at that time were: Kid Ory (trombone) Johnny Dodds (clarinet) Lil Hardin Armstrong (piano) and Johnny St Cyr (banjo)

I think it was recorded on February 26, 1926. There has been some debate over the years regarding the correct key/pitch of this recording. I just found an interesting summary and discussion: http://www.normanfield.com/cornetchopsuey.htm

For the music nerds among us, it's an interesting read

czarnick2 This specific sounds in a (quite flat) F concert, and that's how I learned it
