I Second That Emotion
Japan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe you'll wanna give me kisses sweet
But only for one night with no repeat.
And maybe you'll go away and never call,
And a taste of honey is worse that none at all.
Oh little girl!

In that case I don't want nobody
I do believe that that would only break my heart
Oh, but if you feel like lovin' me
If you got the notion,
I second that emotion.
So, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion
I second that emotion.

Maybe you'll think that love will tie you down
And you don't have the time to hang around.
Or maybe you'll think that love will make us fools,
And so it makes you wise to break the rules.
Oh little girl!

In that case I don't want nobody
I do believe that that would only break my heart
Oh, but if you feel like lovin' me
If you got the notion,
I second that emotion.
So, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion
I second that emotion.

In that case I don't want nobody
I do believe that that would only break my heart
Oh, but if you feel like lovin' me
If you got the notion,
I second that emotion.
So, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotion
I second that emotion.

Overall Meaning

The song "I Second That Emotion" by Japan is a cover of the hit by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The lyrics describe a situation where the singer has met a girl who may only be interested in a short-lived fling. However, the singer is open to the possibility of a lasting relationship, and encourages the girl to take the chance on love. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability and uncertainty, as the singer is unsure if the girl will reciprocate his feelings.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the singer's desire for the girl's love and affection, but also acknowledges the risks involved. The line "I second that emotion" suggests that the singer agrees with the girl's feelings, whatever they may be, and is willing to go along with them. The repetition of the chorus further reinforces the singer's plea for the girl to take a chance on a deeper relationship.

Overall, "I Second That Emotion" is a song about the difficulties and uncertainties of love, and the willingness to take risks in pursuit of a deeper connection with another person.

@Elaine Davies
Not dishwasher as we know them today. That was a hand crank one. Not one with a motor and she got help from a male engineer, sooo.....

"Just leaving that here. "

But why even mention it?

@Elaine Davies Thanks for the information. I looked up those claims and you are correct about the dishwasher. But it appears that toasters were invented by men (I could not find any female names - please correct me if I am wrong), and as for refrigerators, that was mostly men's work but there was one important woman (Florence Parpart) who notably was aided by her husband's engineering expertise.
I agree that kindness and sensitivity, and I would add intelligence, are far preferable to money, and yes ladies love pretty features on a male more than most men understand. (Personally, though, I am more interested in males that have overtly womanly facial and bodily features rather than the "cute" look that women more typically like.) And yes, some women love it when men are interested in hair and makeup, perhaps because it's an interest that is shared between them.
