Sparks
Coldplay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Did I drive you away?
I know what you'll say
You say, "Oh, sing one we know"
But I promise you this
I'll always look out for you
Yeah, that's what I'll do

I say, oh
I say, oh

My heart is yours
It's you that I hold on to
That's what I do
And I know I was wrong
But I won't let you down
Oh yeah, I will, yeah, I will, yes, I will

I said, oh
I cry, oh

Yeah, I saw sparks
Yeah, I saw sparks
And I saw sparks
Yeah, I saw sparks
Sing it loud

La, la, la, la, oh
La, la, la, la, oh
La, la, la, la, oh
La, la, la, la, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Coldplay's song Sparks contains a mix of deep emotions and regret. The overall theme of the song is about a person who has been left alone by their loved ones, and how they are trying to hold on and not let go. The first verse expresses the artist's frustration with being asked to sing a well-known song, but they promise to always look out for the person they are singing to. The chorus vividly describes how the artist saw sparks, which could represent the sudden realization of the need to hold on, or simply a metaphorical reminder of brighter times.

The second verse consists of the artist reassuring their loved one that despite being in the wrong, they will not let them down. There is a sense of conviction and promise in this declaration, unlike the vulnerability of the first verse. The chorus repeats, as if to reinforce the idea that sparks are reminders of hope and the need to persevere. The song concludes with a fueling repetition of "la," perhaps to represent the sound of the sparks being ignited.

Overall, the lyrics of Sparks convey a message of resilience and the need to hold on, while acknowledging past mistakes and regrets. The song mentions sparks metaphorically as something that connects the present with the past and creates the hope for a better future that is worth holding on for.

@josie.141

this song reminds me of him and when we used to talk everyday. reminds me of the building of our unspoken friendship, the rainy afternoons where we would go back and forth on phone calls arguing about something dumb.

then one day, he moved on to one of my best friends.

i was forced to listen to their conversations in class and to be ignored by him when trying to make an effort to socialize. His friendship with her was exactly like how ours was. I couldn’t say anything cause the very new girl he moved on to had clearly liked him back. I had a point where I seemed not to like my own friend just because of that boy. but it wasn’t her fault, we weren’t on terms of exchanging crush names and I’d been holding a reputation of a “loner single” and was known not to like anyone. he’d always seem to be in such a good mood until he was forced to sit down next to me. immediately turning to anyone around him to talk to anyone but me, as if those 2 years of bonding were nothing.

I’d decided to try and finally move on to someone else-but i couldn’t.

he ruined everything about my love life.
