She Wolf
Shakira Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

S-O-S she's in disguise
S-O-S she's in disguise
There's a she-wolf in disguise
Coming out, coming out, coming out

A domesticated girl, that's all you ask of me
Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy
The moon's awake now, with eyes wide open
My body is craving, so feed the hungry

I've been devoting myself to you Monday to Monday
And Friday to Friday
Not getting enough retribution
Or decent incentives to keep me at it
I'm starting to feel just a little abused
Like a coffee machine in an office (uh)
So I'm gonna go somewhere closer
To get me a lover and tell you about it

There's a she-wolf in the closet
Open up and set her free (ah-ooh)
There's a she-wolf in your closet
Let it out so it can breathe

Sitting across the bar, staring right at her prey
It's going well so far, she's gonna get her way
Nocturnal creatures are not so prudent
The moon's my teacher and I'm her student

To locate the single man
I've got on me a special radar
And the fire department hotline
In case I get in trouble later
Not looking for cute little divos
Or rich city guys, who just want to enjoy (uh)
By having a very good time
And behave very bad in the arms of a boy

There's a she-wolf in the closet
Open up and set her free (ah-ooh)
There's a she-wolf in your closet
Let it out so it can breathe

S-O-S she's in disguise
S-O-S she's in disguise
There's a she-wolf in disguise
Coming out, coming out, coming out

S-O-S she's in disguise
S-O-S she's in disguise
There's a she-wolf in disguise
Coming out, coming out, coming out

There's a she-wolf in your closet
Let it out so it can breathe

Overall Meaning

The song "She Wolf" by Shakira is an upbeat and catchy tune that apparently talks about a woman's search for independence and fulfillment. The first lines of the song, "S-O-S she's in disguise," are repeated throughout and set the mood for the tune. The lyrics suggest that there is a she-wolf in hiding, that is, a woman who is suppressed and unable to reveal her true self. The next lines, "Domesticated girl, that's all you ask of me, darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," introduce the idea of the singer, who is the she-wolf, feeling trapped in a domesticated lifestyle. She compares herself to a werewolf (lycanthropy) who transforms into a wild animal as soon as the moon is out.

The chorus then suggests that the she-wolf is tired of being caged up and wants to be free. She says that she has been devoting herself to her lover, but it is not enough as she is not getting what she deserves. She uses the analogy of a coffee machine in an office, suggesting that she feels like an object or machine that is used only for service. In the second verse, she talks about going out to a bar to find a lover, saying that she is not looking for 'cute little divos or rich city guys.' She wants more than that and is ready to explore new things. The song ends again with the repeated "S-O-S she's in disguise" lines followed by "There's a she-wolf in your closet, let it out so it can breathe."

She wolf representing the Mother Goddess, the raising of the divine children, and the connection between the Father God and man. She wolf connections to the primary Goddess are very common across Eurasia.
It is interesting to note how Maria = Rhea Silvia / consort, God / Deus = Zeus / Mars and with the case of Romulus, the She Wolf matched this story.
The below was written by Georgi Mishev who wrote the book Thracian Magic: Past & Present which I currently have been reading through. This book shows how Christanity and Bulgarian (as well as other Slavic and Greek) paganism were merged. I also linked his book below.

"21st of November marks the presentation of the Virgin Mary at the temple as a child.

In Bulgaria the day is also known as the Wolf Mother of God and it marks the end of the Wolf Days, a period with various taboos regarding wolves. This association of the Mother of God with Bulgarian wolf folklore contains echoes of a pre-Christian wolf cult linked to a female deity or mistress of the wolves. The protective power of the she-wolf is invoked in some traditional Bulgarian healing / protective incantations. There is also a Bulgarian harvest song in which a woman forgets her child in the fields after she finishes the day’s work. When she returns she finds three samodivi (wood and water nymphs) in the shape of wolves sitting around the cradle, watching over the child.

Let us celebrate and honor in the next days the Hekate Lykaina (She-Wolf) and Chthonia!"
