And A She-Wolf After the War
Throwing Muses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So it's cowboys in flying colors riding home
Leave my tears alone it's too funny
It's me and she spilling jewels and collarbones gray
(waste of time now I don't want cold, lonely)
Ride by side down the road
And a she-wolf (my face one more square)
Don't be afraid, it's my road once more alone
I can see them riding over the hills
Cowboy hats are back in, this is the future, after the war
And I don't eat anymore, this is your future
It's me and she spilling jewels and collarbones gray
(Frank Lloyd Wright, try to sleep under a dome under the sky)
Side by side down the road
It's my road, once more alone
As a warm gun
Thanking her (she makes me dangerous)
Blood on our teeth
Ready?

Overall Meaning

The song "And A She-Wolf After the War" by Throwing Muses is a layered and complex piece that requires insightful interpretation. It talks about cowboys in flying colors riding back home, and the singer wanting to be left alone with her tears. She speaks of spilling jewels and collarbones gray with someone referred to as "she," and as a waste of time she declares that she does not want to be left cold and lonely. She then talks of riding down the road with a she-wolf, who she reassures not to be afraid, and claims that this is her road once more alone. She ends by talking about cowboys and cowboy hats, indicating that this is the future after the war, but she does not eat anymore, perhaps signifying the toll that the war has taken on her. Finally, the song ends with references to a warm gun and blood on their teeth, suggesting violence and danger.

The song seems to deal with themes of loneliness, isolation, and danger in the aftermath of war. The singer seems to be haunted by the memories of what she has experienced, as she speaks of tears and spilling jewels and collarbones gray. Her encounter with the she-wolf could represent a desire for companionship or protection, or it could be a symbol of her own wild and dangerous side. The references to cowboys and cowboy hats suggest a return to a simpler time, but the violence and bloodshed that are also referenced indicate that things will never be the same again. Overall, the song speaks to the complex emotions and experiences that follow war, and the way that they can leave us feeling lost and alone.

A bit muddy in the first minute but from there on you nail it. I am particularly i pressed by the way you control the attack of your downstrokes. You play the heavy parts heavy and the gentle parts gentle, which to my ear is the key to the part. You also emulate those characteristic Leslie Langston brief melodic fills superbly. This really sings! πŸ™πŸ½
