Fox Cub
Mew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No more trying
Too much terribleness these days
And what you thought was true
Well, they were lying to you
And made a kid cry
So did you change the locks?
And did you hide the fox cub?
Don't make fun
Because we don't

So did you change the locks?
And did you hide the fox cub?
Don't make fun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mew's Fox Cub hint at a sense of disappointment and disillusionment; perhaps the singer has experienced betrayal or lost faith in someone they trusted. The repetition of the lines “So did you change the locks? And did you hide the fox cub? Don't make fun/ Because we don't” could be interpreted as a rhetorical question, implying that the singer already knows the answer - that the other person did indeed change the locks and hide the fox cub. This could be seen as a metaphor for trying to protect oneself or something/someone of value, but ultimately failing to do so.

The line "Too much terribleness these days" is a reflection on the current state of the world and the hardships we all face. The final line "Don't make fun/Because we don't" is a plea to the listener to take things seriously and not trivialize the situation.

Overall, the song Fox Cub is a beautifully crafted and multi-layered piece of music that invites multiple interpretations. The lyrics suggest a deep sense of loss and disillusionment, but the melody and the accompanying music create a haunting, ethereal, and dream-like atmosphere that infuses the song with a sense of melancholic longing.

Couldn't agree more. Yeah, it was one of those albums, for some of us of a certain age/generation -- you probably got it and got INTO it right around a neat point of your life, where you were going through all kinds of changes and figuring out about adult life, and the myriad difficulties/complexities inherent. So all to say, you put this on; you have your backlog knowledge of prog. rock etc., and your philosophical mind burgeoning even more so at this point; and this album creeps into your internal pantheon and you're like, "what!?" And then you dance. And then, IT happened. :D
