You’re Not the One
Sky Ferreira Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dreams stay with you
Always on my mind
I got a lust for love
Seasons bring truth
When I found mine
It was summertime

It's the middle of the night and I'm so gone
And I'm thinking about
How much I need you but you really want somebody else
Should be given the right to carry on
I'm still thinking about
How much I need you but you really want somebody else

You're not the one
Guess you're not the one

Streets like a zoo
Through a city of lights, love at first sight
Silent rays of blue
They slowly glide
Right down my spine

It's the middle of the night and I'm so gone
And I'm thinking about
How much I need you but you really want somebody else
Should be given the right to carry on
I'm still thinking about
How much I need you but you really want somebody else

You're not the one
Guess you're not the one
You're not the one
Guess you're not the one

I was enjoying the ride
And now we're standing on the graveside
Left unsatisfied
Won't even bother to fight, I know

You're not the one
You're not the one
You're not the one
You're not the one

You're not the one
Guess you're not the one
You're not the one
Guess you're not the one

You're not the one
You're not the one
You're not the one
You're not the one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sky Ferreira's song You’re Not The One speak to a protagonist stuck in a tough situation in a relationship. The first verse offers a contrast between dreams and reality: the singer is dreaming of a love that cannot be realized; yet, she is aware of her lust for love. The second verse offers the image of a city of lights, of a love at first sight, and of silent rays of blue that evoke intense longing. However, despite her feelings, the singer knows she is not loved as much as she loves.

In the pre-chorus and chorus, the singer is caught up in a realization that hurts: she needs the person she loves, but that person wants somebody else. The line "Should be given the right to carry on" speaks of the singer's possible feelings of injustice, as if the person she loves is allowed to move on while she is left grieving. However, by the end of the song, the singer has come to terms with the situation. She knows the person she loves is not the right one for her - and that fighting is not worth it.

Some possible interpretations of the song include themes such as unrequited love; longing and the power of attraction; the conflict between desires and reality; the acceptance of loss and the possibility of moving on.
