At Last
Stevie Wonder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was never spellbound by a starry sky
What is there to moon glow, when love has passed you by
Then there came a midnight and the world was new
Now here am I so spellbound, darling
Not by stars, but just by you

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over and life is like a song
At Last the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped in clover the night I looked at you
I found a dream that I can speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill I've never known
You smiled and then the spell was cast
And here we are in Heaven
For you are mine at last

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over and life is like a song
At last the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped in clover the night I looked at you
I found a dream that I can speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill I've never known
You smiled and then the spell was cast
And here we are in Heaven

Overall Meaning

Stevie Wonder's At Last is a beautiful timeless love song. It presents the singer's discovery of his true love and his feeling of complete fulfillment. The lyrics begin with highlighting the singer's past experiences of looking at a starry sky without being mesmerized by its beauty. The absence of love had led him to be indifferent to nature's charm. However, love finds him, and everything changes as he experiences a beautiful new world. The singer is spellbound now but not by the stars as he has found the love of his life.

The chorus of the song expresses the completion and contentment that the singer feels as he introduces his long-awaited love. The lonely days of searching for true love are over, and life is like a blissful song. The skies above turn blue, and the singer is overwhelmed with emotions. The night he found his significant other, his heart was wrapped in clover. The metaphor represents his sense of fortune and happiness at his newfound love. The singer has finally found the dream that he can call his own, and he cherishes it. The thrill he experiences is unlike any other, and he is now in heaven since he is with his love.

James Jamerson was one of the greatest electric bassists to ever live, hands down.

If you're looking for more Jamerson basslines check out Stevie's For Once In My Life album, he did that whole album. Here's a playlist to the album. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC664E0649EF1DAE3

When I was small I remember my sister(RIP) bought this album and I loved listening to this song particularly little did I know I would grow to not only be a lover of music but also one who plays it, this is still one of my favorite Stevie songs!

His bass lines in 'For Once in My Life' and 'What's Going On' by Marvin Gaye are two of my favorites. JJ's melodic approach to playing was a great complement to the Motown sound, and bass playing in general.

Bassist is James Jamerson who played bass in a the Motown House band... a genius who revolutionsed the art of playing bass and in many ways invited a lot of the funk and disco bass which followed... sadly he died a poor man which is IMHO a tragedy. Still this is a terrific performance from both JJ and Stevie...

Stevie took this song out of Etta's blues and into the sunshine where it belongs. Exactly where the writers intended it to be. A notch up from Glenn Miller in the 1942 original. Originally I thought Nat King Cole's cover (recorded 1956) 5 yrs before Etta's was the best. Followed by the First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald's, then Etta. But I gotta put Stevie up there now, that I've heard it! Thanks for uploading this! :D
