Interiors
Manic Street Preachers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who sees the interiors like young Willem once did
Your beautiful triangle of distortion
Now you seem to forget it so much
Who sees the interiors like young Willem once did

Say you can remember say where is the tomorrow
Say where you are coming from
Say what you have left us

Are we too tired to try and understand
That nothing is nothing on that we depend
Take my hand together and we will cry
It really makes no difference
To what you see inside to what you see inside

Who sees the interiors like young Willem once did

A beautiful landscape of your nation
Another era is not forthcoming
Who sees the interiors
Like young Willem once did

Say you can remember say where is the tomorrow
Say where you are coming from say what you have

Are we too tired to try and understand
That nothing is nothing on that we depend
Take my hand together and we will cry
It really makes no difference to what you see inside

To what you see inside

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Interiors by Manic Street Preachers, “Who sees the interiors like young Willem once did, your beautiful triangle of distortion, now you seem to forget it so much, who sees the interiors like young Willem once did,” sets the tone for the entire song. The reference to “young Willem” is unknown but it can be assumed that it is a reference to someone who was once able to see the world with a sense of wonder, beauty, and imagination. The triangle of distortion is a metaphor for how we view the world through our own personal biases which leads us to see things in a distorted way. The line “now you seem to forget it so much” could be directed at society as a whole and our collective inability to connect with our childlike sense of wonder, beauty, and imagination.

In the next verse, the lyrics move to a slightly more personal level. “Say you can remember say where is the tomorrow, say where you are coming from, say what you have left us”. It seems to be a plea to someone or something to remember its origins and to understand where it is going in the future. The verse is almost a call to arms to remember who we once were, what we left behind and what we still have to offer.

The chorus repeats the theme of the song, the idea that we need to remember our childlike sense of wonder and beauty. The line, “are we too tired to try and understand” could be interpreted as society’s willingness to give up on trying to see the world through fresh eyes. The final line, “it really makes no difference to what you see inside, to what you see inside,” is a reminder that ultimately it is what we see inside ourselves that truly matters
