Cut from the Cloth
The Evens Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is this my world I no longer recognize
I'm hearing common words, common expressions
But nothing is common in my eyes
How do people sleep amidst the slaughter
Why would they vote in favor of their own defeat
Get out to the well and check the water (water water)
Results were incomplete
Cut from the cloth
Cut from the cloth, and dead to the masses
Just another case to be eulogized
But I'm breathing, breathing with no assistance
And responding to stimuli
Can anyone explain these new laws of nature
Why would they rule in favor of their own defeat
Cynics are excused from standing up to problems (problems problems)
Because they can't get out of their seats
Cut from the cloth, ran out screaming
I hope that none of this will stick to me
Everyone is nice, everyone is kind now
At least they're nice and kind to me
Why would they fold up something so precious
Why would they sing in favor of their own defeat
Maybe they found their voice while out shopping
The price was hard to beat
Cut from the cloth
Cut from the cloth
Cut from the cloth
Cut from the cloth
Cut from the cloth
Cut from the cloth
The Evens' song Cut from the Cloth is a commentary on the state of the world and society. The first verse talks about feeling disconnected from the world, as if it has changed so much they no longer recognize it. Even though people are using "common words" and "common expressions," nothing feels familiar or ordinary. This feeling of disconnection is followed by a questioning of society's choices. The line "How do people sleep amidst the slaughter" refers to individuals ignoring the problems around them and continuing with their lives as usual. The following line "Why would they vote in favor of their own defeat" suggests that people are complacent in their own demise, continuing to elect officials whose policies are detrimental to their well-being. The line "Get out to the well and check the water" is a call to action, a reminder that we cannot be passive and must educate ourselves on the issues affecting us. The final line of the verse, "Results were incomplete," suggests that even with information, the solutions are not always clear or easy.
The second verse continues with the theme of questioning society's choices. The lines "Can anyone explain these new laws of nature" and "Why would they rule in favor of their own defeat" suggest frustration with the current state of the world, particularly with those in power. The line "Cynics are excused from standing up to problems" acknowledges the widespread belief that nothing can be done to change the world, but also recognizes it as an excuse for inaction. The final line of the verse "Because they can't get out of their seats" suggests that even those who recognize the problems in society are not doing enough to combat them.
