Falling Slowly
The Frames Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know you but I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me and always fool me
And I can't react

And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
And moods that take me and erase me
And I'll paint it black

Well you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now

Why don't you come?
One, two, three, four

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along, along
Baby, why don't you come home?

Overall Meaning

The Frames’ “Falling Slowly” is a love song about the instant connection between two people, despite their lack of familiarity with one another. The opening lines, “I don’t know you but I want you / All the more for that” perfectly encapsulates this feeling. The singer feels a deep attraction and connection with the person in question, despite not having any knowledge of them. The second verse reinforces the idea of missed chances, the singer says “Words fall through me and always fool me / And I can’t react," as if to suggest that despite possible missed opportunities or fleeting moments, true love always finds a way.

The chorus acts as an anthem of hope and perseverance, stating “Take this sinking boat and point it home / We’ve still got time / Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice / You’ve made it now." The idea of a sinking boat may be a metaphor for the struggles that one faces in life, but the singer insists that they have time and hope. The chorus is sung with a sense of urgency, as if the message is one the singer feels deeply and is anxious to convey. The song’s final verse changes up the rhythm with the addition of a countoff, “one, two, three, four”, and leaves us with a final plea “Baby, why don’t you come home?” - summing up the desperate longing for love that this song embodies.

This is a re-recording of the original version from "Swell Season" (and then the 3rd and final version, nominated for an Academy Award, from the "Once" soundtrack)

So, ive only just discovered this version, having known the soundtrack take, then listening back to the "Swell Season" album one...then, finally, ending up at The Frames version. Almost odd to hear it with actual drums! Anyway, do you guys have a favorite out of the 3?? Also, trying to get into The Frames and not sure which record to start with

Angus Mayer

3 people disliked this video, and i respect their disagreement of the greatness of this song. I, however, love it.
