Some Guys Have All The Luck
The Persuaders Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone in a crowd on a bus after work
I'm daydreaming
The guy next to me has his girl on his arm
My arms are empty
How does it feel when the girl that you love
Says "Yes, she loves you"
It seems unfair when there's love everywhere
And yet there's none for you

Some guys have all the luck
Some guys have all the pain
Some guys have a little sunshine in their life
My life is only filled with rain

Someone to take on a walk by the lake
Dear Lord, let her be
Someone who's shy
Someone who liable to cry at sad movies
Ooh, I do believe I would die just to look in her eyes
And find them filled with me
But you're just a dream and as real as it seems
I'm not that lucky

Some guys have all the luck
Some guys have all the pain
Some guys have a little sunshine in their life
My life is only filled with rain

It's just a losing game
The things have got to change
Some girl will give my love a try
With my luck, she'd have her overnight, oh well

Some guys have all the luck
(Alone in a crowd on a bus after work I'm daydreaming)
Some guys have all the pain
Some guys have a little sunshine in their life
(The guy next to me has his girl on his arm
My arms are empty)
My life is only filled with rain

Overall Meaning

The Persuaders' song "Some Guys Have All The Luck" is a ballad about the frustrations of being unlucky in love. The opening lines show the singer daydreaming on a bus after work, feeling alone despite being surrounded by couples. He envies the man next to him who has his girl on his arm, while the singer's own arms are empty. He wonders what it feels like to have the girl you love say she loves you, and why some people seem to have all the luck in finding love while others are left with nothing.

The lyrics continue with the singer's longing for a specific type of woman – someone shy, who cries at sad movies, and would look at him with eyes filled with love. He laments that this woman is only a dream, and that he is not lucky enough to find her in real life. The chorus repeats the theme of some guys having all the luck, while others only have pain and rain in their lives.

The song ends on a note of resignation, with the singer acknowledging that love is a losing game and that things have to change. He hopes that someday a girl will give his love a try, but even then, he doubts his luck will be any better. Ultimately, the song is a poignant reflection on the ups and downs of love, and the ways in which luck can play a role in our romantic lives.

On this day in 1973 {December 22nd} the Persuaders performed "Some Guys Have All The Luck" on the Saturday-afternoon syndicated television program, 'Soul Train'...
At the time the song was at #39 on Billboard's Top 100, that would also be it's peak position on the chart, and it spent eleven weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #7 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
Between 1971 and 1977 the New York City-based group had nine records on the Hot R&B Singles chart, three made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Thin Line Between Love and Hate", for two weeks on October 10th, 1971...
Besides the above two records, their third Top 10 was "Love Gonna Pack Up (And Walk Out)", it peaked at #8 in 1971...

NewChannel9000

Gerald Johnson I agree with you.

MadonnaDelRey

No. I find this version boring. Rod made the song more upbeat and danceable. This one sounds more like a ballad.

NewChannel9000

MadonnaDelRey, Ballads are the best songs. You can’t feel very much of anything (emotionally), and you don’t pay very much attention to the lyrics of a dance song. All you would really notice is the fast beat of the music, for you to get up and DANCE to. They’re O.K. to listen to, sometimes, but not all of the time. Great singing and emotionally moving, well-written lyrics - music that people actually would sit down and LISTEN to - make wonderful songs, too.
