Brooklyn
Woodkid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Buying some vintage records in Williamsberg stores
Playing paper boats on east river shores
Meeting mermaids and lobsters in Coney Island
Puking our deep fried Oreos in Astroland
Spending our days watching skylines from rooftops
On Independence Day, Manhattan fireworks
Life is easier where the walls are red
Brooklyn is a place stuck in my head
Here in Paris the rain is falling
My heart belongs to Brooklyn

I'm sick of four star food, I want to be where life is
As simple as two bucks pizza slices
I swear I'll tell you, next time I knock at your door
That I am not leaving Brooklyn anymore
Would it be that nice if you were not part of it?
Would Brooklyn be worth crossing the Atlantic
Life is easier where we can join our hands
Your face is a face that's stuck in my head
Here in Paris rain is falling
My heart belongs to Brooklyn

Life is easier where we can join our hands
Your face is a face that's stuck in my head
Here in Paris rain is falling
My heart belongs to Brooklyn

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Woodkid's song "Brooklyn" capture the emotions of someone who has left their favorite city (Brooklyn) and is missing it dearly. It talks about the small things and everyday experiences that made their life in Brooklyn special. The first verse highlights various activities they used to enjoy in Brooklyn from buying vintage records in Williamsberg stores, playing paper boats on east river shores, meeting mermaids and lobsters in Coney Island to puking on deep-fried Oreos in Astroland. These were simple activities, but they evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and longing.

The second verse talks about how life was easier in Brooklyn where they could watch the skyline from the rooftops, witness the Independence Day fireworks in Manhattan, and enjoy their time where the walls were red. The use of the color red here represents the vibrancy and liveliness of Brooklyn. This verse also contrasts their current life in Paris where the rain is falling and things are much more complicated. They express their desire to return to Brooklyn and its simplicity.

The lyrics are a testament to the strong emotional attachment people have with the places they call home. It is a reminder that our memories and experiences make a place special and meaningful, and we carry them with us wherever we go.

My God, this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

@HamletAndMacbeth

This song makes me want to cry because of its perfection. It's so beautiful, I can't handle it.

@alexanderadavar6439

What is this song even doing to me? It's a nostalgia trip but I have no idea where to. It's powerful for sure, addictive and melancholy

@NBAandmore

Being from Brooklyn, I can definitely say that it is a truly magical place. All of the songs you mention are perfectly representative of Brooklyn, because it is the most diverse and fascinating area I have ever seen. You will find every type of person imaginable, all in one neighborhood. Sadly, I now live in London, but my heart will always belong to Brooklyn.
