Grave Robber
Petra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a step that we all take alone
An appointment we have with the great unknown
Like a vapor this life is just waiting to pass
Like the flowers that fade, like the withering grass
But life seems so long and so complete
And the grave an impossible potion to cheat
But there's one who has been there and still lives to tell
There is one who has been through both heaven and hell
And the grave will come up empty-handed the day
Jesus will come and steal us away

[Chorus]
Where is the sting, tell me where is the bite
When the grave robber comes like a thief in the night
Where is the victory, where is the prize
When the grave robber comes
And death finally dies

Many still mourn and many still weep
For those that the love who have fallen asleep
But we have this hope though our hearts may still ache
Just one shout from above and they all will awake
And in the reunion of joy we will see
Death will be swallowed in sweet victory

When the last enemy is done from the dust will come a song
Those asleep will be awakened, not a one will be forsakened
He shall wipe away our tears, he will steal away our fears
There will be no sad tomorrow, there will be no pain and sorrow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Petra's song "Grave Robber" explore the inevitability of death and the hope of resurrection. The song starts by acknowledging that death is a reality that we all have to face alone. Life is fleeting and temporary, like a vapor or fading flowers. However, the idea of facing the grave seems impossible to cheat, and life stretches out so long and complete. The chorus then poses a question about the victory of death when it is robbed by the graveyard robber. The song makes it clear that death has been defeated by Jesus, who has gone through both heaven and hell. Therefore, the day will come when Jesus will return to take away the believers, and the grave will suffer defeat because Jesus will rob it, eradicating death itself.

The song continues by reminding the listeners that death leaves those who remain mourning and longing for the departed. Despite this, we have good hope that those who have passed on to be with the Lord can hear Christ's voice and rise again. This reunion will be a time of uncontainable joy, and death will be swallowed up in sweet victory. The song ends with the assurance that God will wipe away every tear from our eyes. There will be no more sorrow, no pain, and no sadness.

@@chadrasmussen1154 Please “Kiss the Son”, (God in flesh) which was even foretold in the Psalms. From start to finish, the Bible is about inheritance. Jesus died (for you) and rose again and will return. I long to be with Him in His Kingdom.

John 20:28
28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

Psalms 2:6-12
6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Plus, I saw your January 2023 video. Why so much vulgarity? Nearly every other word, yet you speak of being in heaven when you die. No one with a mouth spewing out vulgarity and a heart full of anger and hate like that will be welcome in the gates of heaven. It won’t happen. I hope you have changed since last year and have realized that because, “every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”.

Luke 6:45
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Matthew 12:34-37
34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

@OnTheThirdDay

I am sorry to hear this.
I hope that these words come to you well.

I am just coming from a video about the death of Nabeel Qureshi, a Christian apologist who recently passed into the next life after his fight against cancer.
I had actually come here to attach the link for someone who had mentioned the verse: “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” and so I am back to this song.
This song has been very touching to me.
