Eddie's tone and flexibility ...still underrated. What a sound he could get, then another, then another...

When I was living in Philly in the early '70s, WRTI played this all the time - and I truly loved it!
Jeffrey Hall
WRTI, thanks for the memories!

My dad turned me onto this as a 7 year old. The circle was completed when I played drums with him for 2 nights in DC. Raining hard, I drove him to his hotel. We talked until the sun came up, advising me on playing with the right musicians, showing up on time, negotiating the right money. He made his translation two weeks later..

I first heard this song 32 years ago when I was beginning to study jazz guitar. It is a great song and the jazz solos in this song are great! I played this recording for my guitar teacher and he told me that this song is from the movie, Exodus. That was a great movie!

EXODUS by Eddie Harris is one of the "Big Three" songs that turned me on to jazz starting with Ahmad Jamal's "POINCIANA" in '59, "ALL BLUES" from KIND OF BLUE (especially my musical hero John Coltrane's solo) in '59 and then EXODUS in '61 - These three songs help me formulate "My life-time love of Jazz" - Joe Diorio's guitar solo is a thing of beauty and he was only in his mid 20's at that time - today (at age 79) he is currently an instructor in USC's Jazz Studies Program and still plays regularly in the L.A. area - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ" (and make your own list of the songs that turned you on to this great musical art-form)

Thanks

Excellent choices. I could offer a few more that "brought me to jazz' including Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis and maybe a half dozen more but Harris and Jamal would be at the top of the list.

Thanks for your response - always enjoyed Paul Desmond and Take Five was a classic during that time period also - my favorite Desmond recordings were with my all time favorite guitarist, Jim Hall - check out CONCIERTO and 1st PLACE AGAIN -they are great - 'KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ"

The hippest music of the Mad Men Era. In addition to being able to imbibe early-yet-precocious EH, everyone else is stellar as well, most especially Joe Diorio on Guitar and the understated-yet-impeccably-precise drumming of Harold Jones. My favorite interpretation of one of my favorite movie themes.

@comeacross9 Brubeck's "Take Five"

@tuxguys "Girl from Ipanema" Stan Getz,Joao Gilberto,Astrud Gilberto & Antonio Carlos Jobim. Be well.

This along with Ella's "Mack the Knife",Brubeck's "Take Five" and Steve Allen's "Gravy Waltz" were some of the few jazz records that got some play on the Top Forty AM stations in the early '60's.

I love this jazz song .Roosevelt Edwards Jr. 1-22-22 It's smooth and easy to listen too.6:29A.M.

Grew up listening to this. It's still magnificent!

Hank Mancini hits the spot..right up there with Eddies..also Johnny Smith's guitar rendition is something else..

A genuine classic!

The first time I heard this I got a spiritual awakening that this song was about my people and I played it raggedy on my dad's Fisher hifi thanks Eddie Harris and thank you Most High!!!

Wow, I ‘d almost forgotten how much this cut meant to me when it first came out! Its one of the main reasons I started playing the tenor sax! Thanks fellas for all of the inspiration wherever you all are❤️😎!!!

Still the instrumental standard bearer for this tune. Never even heard of bassist Bill Yancey...knew nothing about this venerable Chicago musician, but he's like Gene Tenace in the 1972 World Series...he comes from out of the relative unknown here to give you an All Star performance.
greg fechik
@George Sember It still is. i know, I live there.

I love those triplets played masterfully by the bass player! Chicago must have been stocked with great players back in the 50s/60s!
Troy Tempest
I had the album back then. Just as good even now. Thank you!

You're welcome, Troy-san!! Otaku4 (*^_^)/

Mr. Eddie Harris , so smooth and lyrical in his soloing.
Pat Mallinger
Wish I heard Eddie live. Although I was fortunate to work decades with Willie, and have a steady weekend hotel gig with Bill Yancy downtown Chicago with the Wallace Burton Trio. Bill was one of the kindest men I've ever known.
JoJo Zawawi
This is exquisite.

Met Eddie at a music store in the 70s. Real nice guy!

Living here in Chicago, I was fortunate to see the great Willie Pickens many times. My biggest thrill is when he shared the bill with my daughters high school jazz band and he complimented her piano playing.
Mark Bridwell
What a great ! report . Willie and Eddie Harris had a long association then Eddie moved to Los Angeles . And sadly passed in 1996 .

Love this song

Eddie dropped into a Valencia Street club in San Francisco in the 80's, and played electric piano. Man, the chords...

I can remembered when this first came out back in the 60. It sound good then, and it sound good today.
Undoubtedly, one of my most favorite creations on earth. #OdedFriedGaon #OdedMusic #Audioded

In Jerusalem in 2017..while walking down one of the old town stone alleyways, I head the tune playing. Seemed to "in time" with the moment at that time...

San Francisco 2001: Midnight driving across the Bay Bridge after dinner, drinks and live Jazz @ BIX Restaurant. In the passenger seat is a Female movie star (I don't name names) she is wearing a red minidress, pantyhose, heels and a lot of legs showing and is totallly dolled up. I turned on the radio, we're holding hands and this song came on--we looked at each other, smiled, listened and enjoyed a nice slow drive to the East Bay. Magical

Too bad they left the guitar solo off the 45rpm version that hit the jukeboxes and and AM radio stations back in the day. Joe Diorio’s guitar solo is truly beautiful!

This song hit the charts after the original Exodus theme back in the day. Didn't go as high as the original but did very well.

Wonder who the seven guys who didn't like it were?
Santi Koddau
Go and figured it out...they also put Jesus in a cross.

One of the reasons may be jealousy against me or my videos. Otaku4 (^_^;)

@60otaku4 Wonder why people that don't like it, bother to listen to it?

I can't figure out who they are but it is probably guessed that they are dissatisfied about all of my videos... Otaku4 (^_^;)
