Overall Meaning

In Blur's song "Battle," the singer's lyrics convey a certain level of aggression and competitiveness with lines like "Battle, battle, battle, battle, battle" and "Battle someone, oh." The repetition of the word "battle" highlights the intensity of the situation and the urgency of the challenge. While the lyrics themselves are fairly brief, they paint a picture of an individual who is determined to win, defeat their opponent and emerge victorious.

The words of the song seem to be directed towards an unnamed rival, someone who is being challenged to a physical or mental competition. The line "Kill until sub-zero" suggests a degree of violence, but it could also be interpreted as a desire to win at all costs. The last verse implies that this is the end of the line for their challenger, utilizing the words "Take your last one now" to suggest that the competition has ended and that the singer has been victorious.

Overall, "Battle" is a song that exudes energy and drive, urging the listener to take on any and all challenges and emerge victorious, no matter the cost.

I discovered this song in the most unorthodox way. It was 2002, I was 10 years old, and one morning in a school assembly our headmaster put an image up on one of those old overhead projectors. The image was of a painting by Salvador Dali 'The persistence of memory' (the melting clocks painting). He challenged us all to find a piece of music at home that we believe suits the image, and to bring in our chosen piece on CD. The winning CD would be played in assembly at the end of the week with the image displayed. I don't even know why I was so determined to find the perfect match, but sure enough I went home with a plan on sitting there for hours if I had to listening through my dad's CD's. Blur 13 just happened to be sat at the top of the pile, took me less than 5 minutes to come across this song and I immediately knew the search was already over, very first moment I heard that almost metronome sounding opening. My selection ultimately beat out fierce competition from S Club 7 and the Vengaboys and I never felt so chuffed having it played on the Friday morning, until I had to get up and explain to the entire school why I chose it. I have no idea what I said
