Falling Slowly
Glen Hansard Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out, oh
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
And moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
Well, you have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly, sing your melody
I'll sing along, oh, oh, oh
Take it all
I played the cards too late
Now you're gone
The opening lines of Glen Hansard's song "Falling Slowly" convey a sense of longing and vulnerability. The singer admits to not knowing the person he is addressing directly, yet the words they exchange fall through him and “always fool” him. This may suggest that he is emotionally invested in this person, but feels incapable of expressing his true feelings. The second verse speaks to the feeling of being trapped, unable to overcome the games and patterns that keep him from connecting with the person he desires. However, the chorus offers a glimmer of hope. The lines "Take this sinking boat and point it home / We've still got time / Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice / You'll make it now" suggest that despite the challenges, there is still a chance for the relationship to be salvaged.
The imagery of a sinking boat is potent, signifying the fragility of their situation. But the line "point it home" connotes a sense of direction, and the idea that they have the power to steer their course. The line "raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice" reinforces this sense of agency. It is a call to action, encouraging the person the singer addresses to speak up and take control of their life. In the bridge, the singer suggests that the person has struggled enough and it is time for them to win.
Overall, "Falling Slowly" speaks to the complex emotions of desire, vulnerability, and the struggle to connect. It suggests that while these feelings are not easy to navigate, there is always hope if we take action and steer ourselves towards a better future.

Everyone who was part of this movie should be proud for the rest of their lives: an irish independent production with a small budget of a few thousand dollars conquered the world, and this song ended up winning an Oscar. That's absolutely incredible. It is still one of my favorite movies, it's raw, it's real.. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scared from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting there reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day. :)
