Misty
Kate Bush Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Roll his body.
Give him eyes.
Make him smile for me,
Give him life.

My hand is bleeding, I run back inside.
I turn off the light,
Switch on a starry night.
My window flies open.

My bedroom fills with falling snow,
Should be a dream but I'm not sleepy.
I see his snowy white face but I'm not afraid.
He lies down beside me.

So cold next to me.
I can feel him melting in my hand.
Melting, in my hand.
He won't speak to me.

His crooked mouth is full of dead leaves.
Full of dead leaves, bits of twisted branches and frozen garden,
crushed and stolen grasses from slumbering lawn.
He is dissolving, dissolving before me and dawn will come soon.

What kind of spirit is this?
Our one and only tryst.
His breath all misty,
And when I kiss his ice-cream lips

And his creamy skin,
His snowy white arms surround me.
So cold next to me.
I can feel him melting in my hand.

Melting, melting, in my hand.
Sunday morning.
I can't find him.
The sheets are soaking

And on my pillow:
Dead leaves, bits of twisted branches and frozen garden,
crushed and stolen grasses from slumbering lawn.
I can't find him - Misty

Oh please can you help me?
He must be somewhere.
Open window closing,
Oh but wait, it's still snowing.

If you're out there,
I'm coming out on the ledge.
I'm going out on the ledge.

Overall Meaning

Kate Bush’s song “Misty” is a haunting love story where the singer meets a ghostly figure and falls in love with him. The song begins with the singer commanding someone to “roll his body” and “give him eyes” because she desires to bring this mystical creature to life. She then cuts her hand and runs back inside, where she sees her room fill with falling snow. The creature appears, and the singer embraces him, feeling his coldness but also his desire to be with her. Soon after, he begins to dissolve before her, and the singer falls asleep with the melting, dissolving creature by her side.

The second verse is just as dreamy and surreal as the first, with the singer kissing the creature’s “ice-cream lips” and feeling his “creamy skin” before he disappears. The song ends with the singer frantically searching for him, but he is nowhere to be found, and she is left with only “bits of twisted branches and frozen garden” as evidence that he was ever there.

The lyrics to “Misty” are poetic and romantic, with a haunting quality that is signature to Kate Bush’s music. While some may interpret the song as simply a strange and surreal love story, others may view it as exploring themes such as mortality, longing, and the passage of time.

oh man we can only hope she drops a new album <3

@nickavenoso7851

Kate had said in interviews that she was already working on another album at the time of 50 Words For Snow’s release, so we’ll see. I love Kate and all of her albums, so a new album would be definitely a treat, but it’s all up to her. Tbh, I could care less if she can’t sing like she used to or she can’t hit the high notes and stuff like that. Every song & album that Kate has released I’ve loved.

@Missjunebugfreak

IMO, this is one of the best songs Kate has written. It's captivating and sad at the same time.

@chevjustchev

Kate wrote a song about a one night love affair with a snowman and it made me cry. Name any other artist that could pull that off lol. Otherworldly. She is beautiful.
