16 Horsepower Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey mister with your iron feet yeah
Never waver from your path
You think you got a way with something boy
See his hand feel his staff
Oh you got away with words alright
An quite a way with the ladies
Your thoughts are troubled
As you hang a left
There ain't no maybees

Come an sing me down
Give my conscience a poundin'
Come an shake my ground
With the sound of heaven's houndin'

You're thinkin' when this is all over
We'll all sit back an laugh
I don't think so see cause
I done the math
Ain't lookin' to gain no honor
No no not among the thieves
I'll be there right beside you friend
In judgment on my knees

Now here you come a draggin'
Jus' couldn't help yourself
Puttin' on your poor mouth an'
Takin' from His wealth you
You come up proper now you
You ride a faithless steed
Took you down the wrong road son
Word an in deed yeah

Come an sing me down
Give my conscience a poundin'
Come an shake my ground
With the sound of heaven's houndin'

Come an sing us down
Give our conscience a poundin'
Come an shake our ground Lord
With the sound of heaven's houndin'

Come an take our crowns Lord
Give our conscience a poundin'
Come an take our crown Lord
With the sound of heaven's houndin'

Overall Meaning

The song "Clogger" by 16 Horsepower is a powerful song that speaks to the hypocrisy and judgmental nature of some religious figures. The lyrics showcase a level of cynicism about religious leaders who believe they have gotten away with their wrongdoing. The lines "Hey mister with your iron feet yeah/Never waver from your path/You think you got a way with something boy/See his hand feel his staff" suggest that the persona of the song is calling out the religious leaders who believe they are above reproach. The lyrics also critique the way these leaders use their words to manipulate and impress others. The lines "Oh you got away with words alright/An quite a way with the ladies/Your thoughts are troubled/As you hang a left/There ain't no maybees" convey a sense of skepticism about the intentions of these leaders.

The chorus of the song urges the religious leaders to be accountable for their actions. The persona of the song asks them to "give my conscience a pounding" and "shake my ground with the sound of heaven's hounding." The persona seems to believe that a reckoning is coming and that these leaders will be held accountable for their actions. The lyrics suggest that the persona is not looking to gain "honor among the thieves" but rather to stand alongside those being judged for their wrongdoing.

Overall, "Clogger" is a powerful song that speaks to the complexity of religious leaders and the way they are often held to different standards than others. We thought we were the only ones who heard of these guys.I got "Secret South" for free from a CD store in Pleasant Hill, CA back in 2000. Unsung heroes.

I recently rediscovered 16 Horsepower and played the Secret South album in my car on my many and various journeys. I love every song, and I now need to invest in their other albums.

I come back to 16HP every now and then, they were very unique back in the days and I still like them.

This video was - if I'm not mistaken - a (hidden?) track on the 'Limited Edition' of "Secret South". It was a small *.mov-file, so you had to install QT on your computer to watch it.
Therefore, the a/v-quality sucks from nowadays perspective.

On fire..

I think Secret South is their finest album. Ironically their first after being dropped by a major label. 16HP was never going to be big - DEE would never go mainstream - but I fucking love their music. BTW, I'm an atheist.
