Desert Rose
Sting Lyrics

Hathe mada tawila
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
The rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

Aman aman aman aman aman

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall

Ya lili ah ya leel

@Mu same here! A Friend sent me the link via messenger and when I opened the view is slightly different than when you are directly opening your own app. Anyways, managed to open description to see the name of the ‘other artist’ and couldn’t find it so I ended up searching for the song through my YouTube account and the 1st thing I found was this initial comment. Then I went back and realised there are many versions of this song’s video with Cheb’s name so I thought: Oh, okay….perhaps I rushed into conclusions…..
But hell no! This is actually STING’s YouTube channel and he ‘forgot’ to mention the most important collaborator. I remember when he was promoting his new album…at the time the way he was marketing it was by going to daily chat shows with Cheb being presented as a fantastic collaborator as well as a group of young musicians who are also involved here. Back then when this came out Sting hasn’t had anything good for a long time and the main reason one could read about him occasionally in British tabloids was because of his unorthodox marriage arrangement and yoga/guru/meditation blah blah……

I mean Sting has a brilliant voice, I use to listen to his band since I was a teenager…..remember really going crazy about I’m an Englishman in New York and than going back to his very beginnings. However, despite being from the last century, growing up with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Mississippi Delta Blues, The Doors and so on I always kept searching for new musicians, listening current trends as and when they were coming out and now I’m learning so much through my 22 and 14 year old kids music preferences so when I think about Sting there are only 3 songs that come into my mind and this one….that’s about it!

For some reason I find him to be a bit of a dick…..but then this is the attitude of western musicians seeing English and American music as the superior to all of the other worlds music yet it’s rare to find a successful Western musician of Sting’s generation that didn’t get inspired by some tribal sound at some point or that didn’t incorporate/add some ‘ethnic’ aspect to their own tunes: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Madonna, The Queen and so on….

Huh. I really carried on with this one….gulp.

Desert Rose - lyrics:

Ley ley hey Ley ley hey Ah ah Ah ah

{ Night oh night oh }

Hadaee mada tawila
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti
Wa ana nahos ana wahala ghzalti

{ It has been a long time
And I am looking for myself and my gazelle (loved one)
And I am looking for myself and my gazelle (loved one)
And I am looking for myself and my gazelle (loved one) }

Ya ley ah ya ley

{ Oh night oh night }

I dream of rain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I dream of gardens in the desert sand.
I wake in vain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I dream of love as time runs through my hand.

I dream of fire, eh-ley heh-ley...
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire.
And in the flames, eh-ley heh-ley...
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire.

This desert rose, eh-ley heh-ley...
Each of her veils, a secret promise,
This desert flower, eh-ley heh-ley...
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this.

And as she turns, eh-ley heh-ley...
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams,
This fire burns, eh-ley heh-ley...
I realize that nothing's as it seems.

I dream of rain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I dream of gardens in the desert sand.
I wake in vain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I dream of love as time runs through my hand.

I dream of rain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I lift my gaze to empty skies above.
I close my eyes - this rare perfume
Is the sweet intoxication of her love.

Aman aman aman

(Aman aman aman
Omry feek antia
Ma ghair antia
Ma ghair antia)

{ My life is in you
And no one other than you
And no one other than you }

I dream of rain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I dream of gardens in the desert sand.
I wake in vain, eh-ley heh-ley...
I dream of love as time runs through my hand.

Sweet desert rose, eh-ley heh-ley...
Each of her veils, a secret promise,
This desert flower, eh-ley heh-ley...
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this.

Sweet desert rose, eh-ley heh-ley...
This memory of Eden haunts us all.
This desert flower, this rare perfume,
Is the sweet intoxication of the fall.

Ya ley ah ya ley

{ Oh night oh night }

"Cheb Mami" should be mentioned in the title , without his voice the song would be such a normal piece

how confident has the singer started to sing, it is the history of the Arabic culture which gives him the power, so attractive

I, DON'T, EXIST

Let's be honest. All these years later it's still a beautiful song but it definitely wouldn't be as beautiful without Cheb Mami blessing us with that heavenly voice
