Deny
Yasmine Hamdan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The song Deny by Yasmine Hamdan is a beautiful expression of a lover’s yearning for their beloved. The lyrics are emotional and touch upon themes of distance, longing, and desire. The song starts with the words “Deny” which can be interpreted in multiple ways, for example, it can be seen as the singer of the song denying the distance between them and their lover or denying the fact that their love is not reciprocated. The lyrics connect the night-time with longing for the loved one, and as the night stretches out, the memory of the beloved is invoked to create a feeling of closeness. The scent of the beloved, described as the scent of Oud, is also referenced, and the fragrance is seen as a symbolic representation of the bond between the lovers.
The chorus of the song is particularly gripping as it repeats the phrases “The distance between us has become too much” and “My desire for you has intensified”. The love is so strong that the singer wishes they could engulf their lover, and their desires call out to their lover in a way that is echoed repeatedly throughout the song. The song ends with the lyric “I am a captive of my imagination and the secrets”, which can be seen as a sign that the singer’s desire is unfulfilled and that they have no choice but to continue being a slave to their imagination and the secrets that they hold.

An obsession was born the first time I heard her music, by chance while watching 'Only Lovers Left Alive'. I am infatuated. She makes beautiful and creative music and is probably the most stunning woman I have ever seen. I do not envy her husband, i celebrate the happiness they have, which can be seen in both their work. Keep the dove of peace and love flying
