Goods
Mates of State Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is the story with the fantastic lies
Or some facts to help us minimalize
As for this shelter I can plainly deny
But you can't kill time without injuring us

And we'll count up all the goods now

This is the girl with such fantastic eyes
Such brute creation to but lay up beside
Should cut our nails and wash up our feet
And enjoy the tedium that's yet been untried by me

And we'll count up all the goods now
There are more than you ever thought you'd own

Lift up your fingers and let's untie the string
Let's knot them all to see what this monster brings
'Cause it's real soothing with its tail in its knees
'Cause you can cry once without harrowing thus

And we'll count up all the goods now
Don't you know that they've come to be your host?

Didn't mean to skank your art
Should've never hung around us (dear)
Didn't want your money, oh baby now

When it lasted all day, we would blast it all day
We would bring it on and on

It's all in your head

Overall Meaning

The Mates of State's song Goods tells the story of a relationship that has reached a point of uncertainty. The lyrics suggest that there are fantastic lies that have been told or there are some facts that can help the couple realize that they need to minimize their love for each other. The singer in the song suggests that she cannot deny this shelter, but if they stay together, they will hurt each other as they kill time. The chorus of the song emphasizes the counting of the goods, and it implies that there are many things to be counted that the couple thought they would never own.

In the next verse, the singer talks about a girl with fantastic eyes who is beautiful but with a brute creation. She suggests that they need to relax and enjoy the tedium, which is yet to be explored by her. The chorus is repeated again, and the singer invites her partner to lift up their fingers and untie the string to see what this monster brings. The monster is seen as a metaphor for their relationship. They can cry once without harrowing or causing harm to each other. The final chorus suggests that these goods have come to be their host.

I remember hearing this in 2006 during a summer when I felt the true taste of freedom for the first time. Every time I listen to this I am transported right back.

@grizzlywhisker

I saw these two live in Detroit back in the mid 2000's, probably before this song even came out... I remember Kori was pregnant at the time and they had to ask everyone in the venue not to smoke lol. Anyways, I just stumbled across a couple of their old CDs in my closet and had to look up this song because I hadn't heard it in what feels like ages. Thanks for the music and memories.

I read the comments before i watched the video. Didn't really believe I would cry from watching a music video, but the ending had me in tears. This really hits home with loss of friendship and the void losing someone important to you can affect your life. Your left with regrets. A lot of people will think this is a video between two gay men but that is the furthest thing from the truth. Its about friendship. A issue that isn't really discussed is male friendship and its emotional impact on its individuals. I think the I love you part is supposed to go along with those lines. That you cant be honest and tell your friend you love them even if they are another guy. Death can bring out your real feelings and force you in a way to see them and confront them. To see that you really really needed to tell that person you loved them. To let them know that you cared because one day they will be gone and you never got the chance to say it then.
