Aegian Sea
Aphrodite's Child Lyrics

I saw the martyrs
I heared them crying
I heard them shouting
They were dressed in white
they've been told to wait
The sun was black
the moon was red
the stars were falling
the earth has trembling
And then a crowd impossible to number
Dressed in white
carrying palms shouted amid
the hotless sun
the lightless moon
the windless earth
the colourless sky ...
They'll no more suffer from hunger
they'll no more suffer from thirst
They'll no more suffer from hunger
they'll no more suffer from thirst
They'll no more suffer from hunger
they'll no more suffer from thirst
The lyrics of Aphrodite's Child's song "Aegian Sea" paint a vivid picture of a scene of a catastrophic event, perhaps the apocalypse. The singer describes seeing the souls and martyrs, who are dressed in white and have been told to wait. They are crying and shouting, which suggests that they are in distress. The singer then goes on to describe the various elements of the scene: the black sun, the red moon, the falling stars, the trembling earth, and the colorless sky. The overall impression is of a world in chaos and upheaval.
However, amidst all this destruction, there is a crowd of people, dressed in white and carrying palms, who are shouting amid the chaos. They seem to be the only ones who are not suffering, and in fact, the singer states that they will no longer suffer from hunger or thirst. This crowd is likely meant to represent those who have been saved, perhaps as a result of their faith or good deeds. The contrast between their security and the suffering of the rest of the world makes their presence all the more powerful.

I'm sad that I only found this masterpiece now, 20/05/2022, three days after the passing of the great musician who was Vangelis. But this music will accompany me in my journey in this world from now on. Greetings, and thank you for this piece of art.
