Austin
Blake Shelton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She left without leavin' a number
Said she needed to clear her mind
He figured she'd gone back to Austin
'Cause she talked about it all the time
It was almost a year before she called him up
Three rings and an answering machine is what she got

If your callin' 'bout the car, I sold it
If this is Tuesday night, I'm bowlin'
If you've got somethin' to sell your wastin' your time, I'm not buyin'
If it's anybody else wait for the tone you know what to do
And P.S., if this is Austin, I still love you

The telephone fell to the counter
She heard but she couldn't believe
What kind of man would hang on that long
What kind of love that must be
She waited three days and then she tried again
She didn't know what she'd say
But she heard three rings and then

If it's Friday night, I'm at the ball game
And first thing Saturday, if it don't rain
I'm headed out to the lake and I'll be gone all weekend long
But I'll call you back when I get home on Sunday afternoon
And P.S., if this is Austin, I still love you

Well, this time she left her number
But not another word
Then she waited by the phone on Sunday evening
And this is what he heard

If your callin' 'bout my heart, it's still yours
I should've listened to it a little more
Then it wouldn't have taken me so long
To know where I belong
And by the way, boy, this is no machine your talkin' to
Can't you tell, this is Austin, and I still love you

I still love you

Overall Meaning

The song "Austin" by Blake Shelton tells the story of a couple who have broken up, with the woman leaving without leaving her phone number. The man assumes she has gone back to Austin, as she has talked about it frequently. After almost a year, she calls and hears the man's answering machine. He tells her that he has sold the car, is bowling on Tuesday nights, and is not interested in buying anything. He ends the message with "P.S., if this is Austin, I still love you". The woman is shocked by how long he has held on to the love they once had, and waits three days before calling again. This time, the man is at a ball game on Friday, going to the lake all weekend, and promises to call back on Sunday. She leaves her number but doesn't speak, and later receives a call back. The man apologizes for not listening to his heart more and admits that he still loves her. The song ends with the line "And by the way, boy, this is no machine you're talking to, can't you tell, this is Austin, and I still love you".

The song "Austin" was Blake Shelton's debut single and was released in 2001. It went on to become his first number one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The song was written by David Kent and Kirsti Manna. Manna originally wrote the song about a girl named Austin, but Kent suggested changing the name to a city to make it more relatable. Shelton, who was at the time trying to break through in the music industry, said that the song "blew the doors open" for him. The music video for the song features Shelton wandering through a desert searching for a payphone to call his lost love.

I was with my wife for 28 yrs and cared for her through both times she had cancer. She was the best person in my life. She passed Jan of 2021 and I would gladly marry any woman that could be half of what my wife was. I felt like the richest man in the world as long as I was with her.
