In "Everybody's Fool", a song by Evanescence, the lyrics describe the hypocrisy of society's idols and the disillusionment that follows when they are revealed to be unauthentic. The song implies that we, as a society, have created these idols, who are "perfect by nature" and "icons of self indulgence", to cater to our own need for perfection. These idols, however, are flawed when they're not pretending to be perfect, and the singer of the song sees through the charade. The chorus "Never was and never will be/You don't know how you've betrayed me/And somehow you've got everybody fooled" emphasizes the dishonesty and manipulation of these so-called idols.
The second verse offers a closer look at the idol, specifically a female one, and the attention she garners from her admirers. The singer sees through her facade and understands that she is not real, that she is just as flawed as any other human being, but she continues to deceive her fans. The bridge "Without the mask where will you hide/Can't find yourself lost in your lie" further emphasizes the lack of authenticity in this idol's persona. The final verse features the singer coming to terms with the truth and realizing that even though society's idols have failed her, she no longer needs them. "I know the truth now/I know who you are/And I don't love you anymore" shows that the singer has moved on and is no longer willing to deceive herself.
